The Replacement

Sometimes life changes and things get replaced around the house and no one ever takes into consideration the many years of faithful service the appliances have brought into your life let alone the joys and maybe even the sorrows too.

A good friend of mine informed that she will be buying a new stove for her kitchen. Sure, you’re thinking big deal or great, it’s about time she did. But have you ever thought about what that stove did for her in the past? I bet not! Or even your own stove that you own.

Well this little event got me thinking about my stove, and I will admit that it is a trusty friend in my household and a real lifesaver too. Though I will admit we have had our stressful moments together too, when (I hate to admit it) when I forgot something cooking on the stove top and then there is the smell of something burning or boiling over and I think something nasty and think “great, it’s ruined now”! I am sure you all know this feeling????

But, there are the great smells too, that smell of something wonderful cooking on the stove top and you can’t wait to eat it because it smells so good and the same hold true for the aroma of something yummy baking, roasting, grilling or whatever coming from the oven.

My oven and I have had some challenges through the years to put it nicely. Like the time the oven seemed to shrink because the turkey I bought was to big for the oven. That darn oven seemed to shrink in size over night and I didn’t even notice it. (my gosh I was a bit upset to say the least!!!)

Or there was the time the oven seemed to develop a nasty phase and whenever I popped something into the oven it burnt for whatever reason… Okay, maybe I wasn’t paying attention or was distracted, but I am sure to this day that it was the ovens fault! Or the time (some of you may have experienced this too??) you pop the dinner into the over to cook for your guests who are coming over and for some unexplainable reason the oven isn’t turned on when you check the food one hour later and wonder what has happened here????? A mystery beyond belief……

Then there’s the nasty trick that the oven tries… You pop the food in the oven and somehow the oven gets tooooooo hot and the food burns and bellows out smoke and has a smell of burn food… That is an OMG moment!!! Now what ?????

But through all those trying times with its ups and downs my stove has been a faithful companion in my life and I think we should all be appreciative of the appliance even when it is being replaced, because the old stove also has memories attached to it too and they can be many happy moments in our life and we never really take the time anymore to think about all those great times!

So, before you pop something into the oven or cook something on your stovetop remember those great times associated with your stove. Have a great time cooking !!!

Leftovers again……

There you have it… the big day is over and there is all this food leftover and what to do with it…. OMG… but like every year there are the leftover meals from what is left-over from the 25th and like always the recipe ideas are in abundance online as to what to do with your leftovers.

When I think back on my childhood, my mom didn’t have internet, but somehow knew what to make out of the left-overs from our Christmas dinner, maybe the meals weren’t as exciting as what is around for ideas today, but I must admit what my mom made from the left-overs tasted really good and we never complained either… Thanks “mom” for all the great tasting Christmas meal leftovers!

But the all time favorite back then was left-over turkey on bread with gravy and what ever else was left-over from the meal…. Maybe some of you remember that or still eat it… That was just as good as the meal on Christmas day, if you ask me…. But you didn’t! And the great thing about it was that it was easy to make too…. Not too much work for my mom, who had worked so hard on the previous day in the kitchen preparing everything.

This is a tradition too, but most people don’t see it that way because everyone is too preoccupied with the 25th of December and aren’t thinking about the tradition of eating leftovers… A tradition in itself…. And I think there should be a “ National Left-Over’s day the 26th of December”!

So, for those of you out there going to eat left-over’s today…. All I can say is “ enjoy yourself” on National Left-Over’s day!!

This year too….

Like every year it starts off with a bang from the fireworks and then it’s there the commercials and ads for dieting to lose weight that you may have put on during the holiday season … Me; I don‘t gain weight!!

My clothes may have shrunk in size, maybe I washed them in tooo warm water, but, no it can’t be true that I gained weight during the holiday season!! Though according to all the ads and new diets to try I must have!! I could scream, maybe that would help…

I got to looking at some of those promising diets out there that will give me a figure like a goddess in 12 weeks ( really I have to suffer eating pea sized amounts of food for 3 months …. Neh… too much work for me!!) Then after I finish that diet I have to think about the summer bikini diet…. Though no worries… I think I’ll pass on that one too!! I’m past the bikini stage of life and if I put one on I would probably scare everyone off the beach if they saw me….. AHHHH

This year I thought I need to go on a diet at least once in my life, so after watching all the commercials on TV and glancing magazines; I decided on a magazine that offers a DVD workout too…. Now I am on the way to my goddess figure…. Watch out world!!!

I rushed home with my magazine the other day and just the name of this diet “ Detox your system and easy Yoga”. Really now, what could be easier?? I ask…. I looked at the recipes and jotted down what I need to buy ( I will be bankrupt once I buy everything on the list). Okay I’ll admit not all recipes are for me and don’t look very tasty either. I’ll just make the ones that I like and skip the others.

But, before I start I need to watch the DVD with the easy yoga exercises that will turn my figure into ……. Who knows what by the time I am finished….. Let’s wait and see! Oh, I forgot to mention that I even bought new yoga training clothes to make my workout better.

I popped the DVD into the TV and got ready for action….. There are 3 sections for each part of your body and lots of stuff to read before starting. To be honest I am starting to feel tired already, so I think I’ll get myself a cup of tea and then sit down and watch the first section which is 15 minutes long (all sections are). Not to forget this is for everyone as it says. I feel relieved to know this…. Thanks

The music starts( not very motivating) there the women shows me what to do and carries-on for the 15 minutes and telling me how much fun all this is… Somehow I seem to be missing the action, and it all seems like toooo much work for me! I hit the FF button and skip to the detox recipe ( I hope it tastes good, because I am getting hungry after watching all that exciting action!!)

There before my eyes Miss Yoga starts making a detox drink out of various green veggies and keeps saying that it doesn’t taste good but you should drink it… I started counting how many times she said it tasted terrible and she said it at least 10 times, so there is no way that I am going to make myself one of those green concoction drinks… No,thank-you!!!

After my afternoon filled with a DVD exercises and the detox recipe; I already feel as if I have lost at least 3 pounds, so I think that I can take it easy for the rest of the next 12 weeks and wait for the next new bikini diet DVD to be with the next magazine and I can watch it too and see those pounds just melting away as I sitting on my sofa enjoying a good workout watching a DVD.

Enjoy your dieting whichever one you choose!

Drinking Juice…Tomato

Well hold onto your seats everyone…. I just read that tomato juice actually really tastes better when you are sitting in an aircraft flying to your destination. Now isn’t that something you always wanted to know…. Well, I did!!!

To be honest I am not an avid tomato juice drinker, but do on occasion drink it when flying or there is nothing else on offer. You see tomato juice in all stores whether it be a normal grocery or a health food store, but I have never seen anyone buy tomato juice. Maybe it is an item that you sort of secretly put in your shopping trolley, so that no one knows that you drink it. A plausible explanation …I guess ????

When you take a peek in other folks shopping trolleys you see the normal selection of juices: orange, grape, apple pineapple, and so on… But tomato juice…. NO!! Or maybe I didn’t have my “Tomato juice” look-out glasses on and overlooked seeing it in someone’s trolley ….OMG!! Is all I have to say.

After when I go grocery shopping I will hang around the tomato juice and see how many people buy it…. I wonder how long I’ll have to stand there???? Hopefully not too long, or else I may have to bring my folding chair with me next time, so I don’t have to stand around looking to obvious. Or do you think setting up my folding chair by the tomato juice would be over doing it a bit??? Maybe, but then again I could catch a glimpse of that lone tomato juice buyer.

It is a juice that has been around for years and is supposed to be a healthy drink. I know as a kid I drank it, because my mom thought it was good for me, but when I think back, I don’t know if any of my friends drank tomato juice, or they did it like we did… secretly taking a nip of juice when no one was around… It sounds all so exciting when I think about it now, the glass of tomato juice, with a bit of ground pepper in it…. An exotic drink in its time!!!

But really you can use tomato juice for lots of things… for making soup, tomato sauce, in a mixed drink , and I am sure there hundreds of other things you can make with it.
So, with that thought I will finish here, because I want to get to the grocery store before everyone else does, so that I can buy some tomato juice too.

See, you after at the grocery store, by the tomato juice.. Prost!

Women’s Pages

Now gals don’t misunderstand me here, but I was just reading the women’s pages on some online newspapers… Okay, I know you are thinking doesn’t she have anything better to do with her time? The thing is I admit reading those pages while other say …. “Me, I never read that stuff”……

I am always amazed at what I can learn from those pages here are some examples:

1. Getting older changes how you look and feel ….. WOW, I never knew that and that your make-up sinks into your wrinkles…. OMG… Scream out loud!!!!

2. Train my brain not to eat food that is bad for me….. WELL, I’ll just have to have a serious word with my brain later on today before I open the fridge door!!

3. A wooden bottle that I can pour my cheap wine into and should make it taste better…. What do I do if guests are coming around and they see that I use this wooden bottle thing…. They are going to think that I am a real tight wad and probably not drink all that so called great tasting cheap wine…… good money down the drain

4. Names of kids have effects on their careers later on in life….. I bet my mom never even thought about it back then and how many other people are walking around out there too without their parents thinking in advance about what their child’s career should be when they grow up??? I will have to take a closer look at my name and see how much it actually affected my career …. I need facts!!!

5. Knowing about wine in four hours… probably by then I will be drunk from all the wine I drank before so in the end everything tastes good PROST!!!

6. Beauty secrets that will keep me looking younger….. I know now that I will be looking good in no time!!!

7. Last but not least… cook something to eat. Recipes to make your mouth water! I love that first I need to watch my weight take care of my brain; I’m getting older and have the wrong name. Drink cheap wine out of a wooden bottle and maybe get drunk by learning all about wine but I know after all that excitement I need some beauty tips to make me look great again before I start to cook all those great recipes at the bottom of the page!!

Isn’t it just great gals knowing that all this important information is out there to better our lives!! Enjoy it

Hot Coals …. BBQing

Well it is that time of year again when everyone seems to be getting out their BBQ’s and getting them ready for the official BBQ season….. Whenever that is; I really don’t know but it seems to be in the air.

It seems like a ritual for so many guys to get the BBQ out and set it-up.. what there is to set-up really doesn’t take longer than 30 minutes but the ritual itself must be observed and so with the whole to do it will take guys a couple of hours before the whole process is finished.
This I mean firstly, by finding the BBQ… it could bite you because it is right in front of you in the garage, but it still has to be found. Then there is the bringing it outside to clean it up again, even though this was done in the fall before it was put away…. It’s dirty again for sure, because maybe at Christmas time when Santa stopped by he was hungry and lit-up the BBQ for a quick steak before he made his way to the next house….. One has to be careful.

Now the orders have to be given to the female members of the household who are in charge of the buying of the food and preparing the salads and what not that is together with this BBQ event. Really one does not just BBQ there is a science in it even if one doesn’t want to admit it.

Have you ever seen a group of gals standing alone around a BBQ and the guys just relaxing doing nothing and hoping that the gals will grill the steaks right???? I never have and believe me I have been BBQing for years and in many countries and nowhere have I ever seen gals in charge of the BBQ….

It is sort of like a guy thing I would say… Bringing guys back to the beginning of time when everything was cooked over an open fire and they all stood there and exchanged their stories of adventure knowing that here standing by the BBQ is where the roots of civilization began… Now you know!!!

The gals nowadays drive to the grocery store and forage the aisles for the food needed that will be placed on the grill.. Not exactly an easy task either and steer the shopping trolley through the maze to find the right ingredients and then aim for the beverage section in the hopes of finding the right beverages for that meal…. It all sounds so easy but in reality there are hours of work involved in the short time where the guy(s) stand beside the BBQ and cook the food and take credit for the whole logistics of the evening….

Without the back-office of the BBQ event there would be no BBQing. This section seems to be overlooked sometimes and should not be forgotten about and so I think a big thank you should be said to all those who have spent hours preparing for their BBQ and no one said “Wow, you prepared this all by yourself.” And when I think about the hours my mom spent preparing for those couple of hours of BBQing and especially in the 60’s & 70’s with some of those exotic recipes that were abound was unbelievable…

Here is a little taste of what was popular back then.. I have an old cookbook from my mom with those great favorites of the day:

Hawaiian salad, Old-Fashioned jellied Coleslaw, Good Potato salad ( I never knew there was a bad one), Cottage Cheese Jelly Salad ,and the all time favorite.. Macaroni Salad.

Those are just to name a few and every salad somehow had Jello in it or some other sweet ingredient that was indescribable and we ate it with joy because there was no use complaining anyway!! Mom’s word was the last word when it came to eating what was put in front of you on the picnic table… Dad was the guy in charge of the BBQ and those roles were very distinct and not only in our house it was like that wherever you went.

People say times are changing but one ritual seems to have stayed the same throughout the years and that is BBQing.

But before I end this little post I would like to share with all of you an interesting somewhat unusual recipe from back then from some magazine clipping that was in the cookbook.

Favorite Salad (the name is interesting – I wonder who’s favorite it was??)

1-#2 can applesauce
1-7oz bottle 7-up
1-3 oz. pkg. lime gelatin
½ pt. whipping cream
1-3 oz. pkg. cream cheese
¼ lb. miniature marshmallows

Heat applesauce. Dissolve gelatin in sauce. Cool. Add 7-up. Stir well. Put into mold. Chill until set. Put cheese and marshmallows into bowl. Pour cream over marshmallows and cream cheese. Let stand in refrigerator overnight. Next day, beat cream mixture until thick and creamy. Spread over first layer.

Now that is what I call a salad!!! If anyone does make it, please by all means let me know how it tastes!!

Enjoy BBQing no matter who is cooking the food and maybe try one of those great recipes from back then to bring a bit of change into your salads being served and impress your friends at the same time too…

Dinner Disasters

Well dinner disasters can happen on that all important day of the year but since I was soooooo organized it really didn’t faze me; ok, I lied here it did upset me a bit but hey .. Who’s perfect???

My turkey was the highlight of the table at our place and all the other stuff that went with it too, and not to mention that I had maybe had a glass or two – tooooo many of some alcoholic beverage that seemed to send my brain to another plant and not let it concentrate on the important things at hand …… like cooking!!!!

Everything was on track until I smelt a mysterious odor coming from the kitchen. A note: I had apples baking in the oven filled with rum raisins and marzipan. Here timing was essential but somehow my thoughts were not on those apples and you can guess what happened next??????

Bingo….. The apples had taken on a somewhat brownish black color and the marzipan was definitely well done to say the least! I believe everything should be thoroughly baked then no chance any bacteria.

Once I managed to make my way to the kitchen and discover that my lovely apples weren’t so lovely anymore and there was definitely a funny color smoke building up inside the oven I knew then and there the desert would have to be something else…. But what???? Thank goodness that I had some ice cream in stock to save the day and the best part was no one really remembered what I said earlier about baked apples…… The wonders of conversation and drink!!!

Ok, everyone was happy with the ice cream and then someone had to have an espresso which really threw my concept right out the window!!! Espresso…. Did I have any espresso coffee and where the heck did I put the espresso machine???? I knew it was in the basement, but where??? Panicking I went down stairs and found it staring at me from the shelf and so espresso could be served… Thank goodness! I needed a sherry after that shock!!!

Then after serving everyone their espresso … sorry there was no famous actor at our house to drink it with us; just a bunch of normal folks having a good time!!

And the best bit was and please note this- I didn’t have enough espresso coffee, so I mixed normal coffee with it and I can say it tasted really good too and no one complained either. Just a tip if you are ever caught short of not having enough espresso coffee mix regular coffee with it.

But all in all I managed and had a good time on that hectic day and that was the most important thing!

Maple syrup goes astray

LEBEN UND GEDANKEN

Bad news for lovers of real maple syrup! I read somewhere in the world that thieves have stolen thousands of liters of maple syrup. How can anyone in their right mind do such a horrific thing so that all the maple syrup lovers of the world could possible not have enough maple syrup for their pancakes or French toast? Bring back that syrup!!!!!

This really makes me feel bad because I love maple syrup and don’t want to do without the real thing. Artificial syrup just doesn’t cut the cake and tastes terrible if you ask me. I wonder what those thieves are going to do with all that syrup. Have a giant pancake party and invite the world or are they planning on doing something else with it???

It’s a really sad day when those things happen were people steel our beloved maple syrup. Why those guys could just…
