The Replacement

Sometimes life changes and things get replaced around the house and no one ever takes into consideration the many years of faithful service the appliances have brought into your life let alone the joys and maybe even the sorrows too.

A good friend of mine informed that she will be buying a new stove for her kitchen. Sure, you’re thinking big deal or great, it’s about time she did. But have you ever thought about what that stove did for her in the past? I bet not! Or even your own stove that you own.

Well this little event got me thinking about my stove, and I will admit that it is a trusty friend in my household and a real lifesaver too. Though I will admit we have had our stressful moments together too, when (I hate to admit it) when I forgot something cooking on the stove top and then there is the smell of something burning or boiling over and I think something nasty and think “great, it’s ruined now”! I am sure you all know this feeling????

But, there are the great smells too, that smell of something wonderful cooking on the stove top and you can’t wait to eat it because it smells so good and the same hold true for the aroma of something yummy baking, roasting, grilling or whatever coming from the oven.

My oven and I have had some challenges through the years to put it nicely. Like the time the oven seemed to shrink because the turkey I bought was to big for the oven. That darn oven seemed to shrink in size over night and I didn’t even notice it. (my gosh I was a bit upset to say the least!!!)

Or there was the time the oven seemed to develop a nasty phase and whenever I popped something into the oven it burnt for whatever reason… Okay, maybe I wasn’t paying attention or was distracted, but I am sure to this day that it was the ovens fault! Or the time (some of you may have experienced this too??) you pop the dinner into the over to cook for your guests who are coming over and for some unexplainable reason the oven isn’t turned on when you check the food one hour later and wonder what has happened here????? A mystery beyond belief……

Then there’s the nasty trick that the oven tries… You pop the food in the oven and somehow the oven gets tooooooo hot and the food burns and bellows out smoke and has a smell of burn food… That is an OMG moment!!! Now what ?????

But through all those trying times with its ups and downs my stove has been a faithful companion in my life and I think we should all be appreciative of the appliance even when it is being replaced, because the old stove also has memories attached to it too and they can be many happy moments in our life and we never really take the time anymore to think about all those great times!

So, before you pop something into the oven or cook something on your stovetop remember those great times associated with your stove. Have a great time cooking !!!

Weather, people and moods

Have you ever noticed how the weather seems to influence people’s mood? Well I have and that’s not a scientific fact. At l east were I am people seem in a better mood when the weather gets warmer ( thank goodness, if you ask me… I know you didn’t, but that’s how it is.)

It seems to give them a whole other outlook on life and not complain so much except for when they travel on the underground and then the action starts. Truly an event in it self.

There you sit feeling like you are in a sauna and the beads of sweat rolling off everyone’s face. Not a pretty sight to behold.

Then someone gets the idea to open a window ( truly a crime indeed). Then the action starts.. the first one starts with “it’s drafty “ and shuts the window, next its open again someone says it’s too cold, even though they look like they could pass-out from a heat stroke… it is simply too cold!!!

Another person gets on the train and opens the same window…if looks could kill.. that is their death because now someone shouts at them for opening the window and wanting to let some fresh air in. It seems like fresh air is dangerous nowadays. ( I bet you didn’t know that? If not just travel on the public transport in my city, and then you will know.)

The whole time I just sit there and enjoy the show and wonder what will happen next???? Sometimes I would love to ask the people “ what do you have against fresh air?” Maybe it’s better not to know the answer. I haven’t decided yet.

Though the other day I said something “ this is better than TV” to the person sitting next to me. They did not appreciate my humor, and asked me if I was okay… I thought to myself “ you idiot” , but instead just smiled at them which annoyed them more then the person opening the window. I knew that was borderline, so kept to myself the rest of the trip.

Another person sitting across from me started to complain about it being too warm in the wagon, but wouldn’t open the window because they were worried that there could be a retaliation from some passengers, so decide against the idea. Because those around him said “opening the window would cause cooler air to come into the wagon and could cause injuries”…. Don’t ask me the logic behind that, but it was definitely an original sentence.

Somehow, this opening and closing the window and of course complaining has become a national pastime on the local transport in my area. Which means when out and about make sure you have your own air conditioning system with you so as not to upset those near you and cause an argument.

Enjoy going on public transport!

A little memory ..

Winter is still here and many of us as adults cannot wait for it to be over, so you won’t have to shovel the snow, worry about getting to work on time or simply being snowed in… The view of snow changes with age as many people have told me. I like snow, but still only a certain amount of it, so that makes me as bad as the next person….

But as a kid I never thought about snow that way.. it was simply great no worries, no shoveling, or at least limited shoveling… toboggining, and so forth. A day outside in the snow was simply great to a certain extent!!

Or to top that, a snow day… No school and I could stay home for the day because there was too much snow… A real drag from my mom , because that put a damper on here daily routine to say the least, and no time for coffee with friends, talking on the phone, NO… I was there and demanded attention or to be entertained would be a better choice of words. No daytime TV, no computers… Just simple everyday amusement… Go outside and find something to do, was my mom’s motto and take care… Of what I never knew?? and nor did I ask either….
I just got dressed and went outside…

Though getting dressed to go outside in the snow did require some planning and time too…. Firstly, was my snowsuit dry from yesterdays excursion outside and were my boots dry??? Major concerns for me when I really needed an excuse why not to go outside… And my mom seemed always to be prepared with dry clothes and boots, so as to set me on my way in the perils of winter…. I must say I was not the only kid around in this position… All moms sent their kids outside no matter what the weather conditions were and we were outside for hours running around getting up to something but nothing bad…

Then after we were turning blue from the cold we all seemed to be magically called inside so as not to freeze our back-sides off and have something warm to eat and drink before the next artic expedition in the afternoon… Where we could spend another couple of hours killing time, because we were too tired from the morning round of activities and all the moms were the same…. Kids outside now !!! Then we walked around, hung out in someone’s garage so as not to get too cold or hoped to find a friends mother who felt sorry for us out in the sub zero temperatures ( not really true but it felt like that.)
No sympathy and so we dragged ourselves around until we could go inside for the day and then the great question “ Did you all have fun outside together?”… Really now, standing or walking around in the cold was not our idea of having a great time together and nor did mothers understand this…

But after peeling off all the layers of clothing and looking as though I had been to the artic and back I simply appreciated being inside… And the thought of the next day’s adventures in the snow seemed like a great idea too, because it was something we looked forward too.

Enjoy the snowy weather no matter what age you are!

Another year again with Decorations

There you have it… November is here and Christmas decorations are in all the stores again…. But nothing is new, so I decided to take a look at my collection of decorations that seem to have collected themselves through the years… Maybe you know this phenomenon at your house too???

I see all these tips (life hacks) as to how to organize my decorations and sort them out and so forth and the most annoying are the strings of lights that seem to magically tangle themselves throughout the summer months. How this happens is beyond me…. Really baffling when I think about it (maybe better not to think about it..)

Of course, with good intentions I bought all the organizational material needed to sort out my chaos of decorations, but the thought of them not being placed in their beloved box that I bought them in, that is held together with adhesive tape brings tears to my eyes… that carton or better said the box for the glass tree decorations has a history to it and just looking at the faded price sticker reminds me of the day I bought them… How can an organization box with everything crammed neatly into it give me the same feeling???? No, it can’t!!!!

And there before my eyes are the strings of lights, some brightly colored and others only with white bulbs tangled up overnight by themselves, because I know I placed them properly in the box at the end of the Christmas season, plus which string of lights still works or which string has burnt-out bulbs??? A puzzling question indeed!!!
This is a job that needs to be tackled right away before the magic moment of using them in December… Nothing worse than a burnt-out bulb to ruin the look of your Christmas tree or the fact that the whole darn string of bulbs don’t work because one bulb is burnt-out and the lights are already on the tree… I know the lights worked before I hung them on the tree ( I tried them out first and everyone light-up) I am sure you know that problem too????
Then there are the yearly broken decorations in the box…. How that happened is beyond me??? The OMG effect is best in this case is my motto..

When confronted with a broken glass decoration is care of the utmost importance; not because you could cut yourself, but because maybe the decoration has memories attached to it and so depose of it with care when saying good-bye to it… Good bye dear decoration….we had many years of great times together!!!

One more thing are those plastic decorations that are a dime a dozen but do not stand a chance on my tree, because they just don’t have the shine and shimmer that glass decorations can give you on your tree….

But what I really wanted to say is: Sort out your decorations carefully and enjoy the moments when doing it, because there can be great memories attached to some decorations and we seem to forget that in our busy lives…….. Have fun sorting out!!!

Icy Ice Cream

Nothing better than ice cream in the summer and the fact that it is national ice cream month somewhere in the world makes it even better….. I love ice cream!!

Sitting here thinking about the ice cream makes me think back to the long summer days when I was a kid and the great ice cream that I ate, and the big event of going out somewhere to have an ice cream was indescribable, because it was such a treat and so it made having ice cream all the better.

Nowadays, I don’t think ice cream is a real treat anymore like it was back then. Ice cream brought a highlight into my week and it was something to look forward to and I know it was the same for my friends too. Ice cream was special for us….

There was one place I remember that had soft ice cream …. The big choice: chocolate or vanilla but you could have a topping on the ice cream cone or a sundae with some hard to describe super sweet topping of either chocolate or strawberry … Not that the toppings weren’t made of artificial ingredients as was the fad back then… it was simply a great tasting treat and who cared about what it was made of…. I only saw the ice cream and the topping and it was great!!!

Or there was some other place not far from our house, where you could go into the ice cream parlor and sit down and order a sundae and it was served in a glass looking like a big wine glass (I felt so sophisticated and grown-up) , two scoops of ice cream and gobs of hot fudge poured over it and some whipped cream and topped off with a cherry…. That was the ultimate in the ice cream world in my eyes back then…..

Though there was some stiff completion out there as to where had the best ice cream and those places were on the ball when it came to creating something using ice cream!

Some ingeniously integrated ice cream into their menu with the root beer float that had a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a glass of root beer, or the other one; a glass of soda pop and a scoop of ice cream in it. That was living at its best and nothing could possibly be better than that in the summer.

Ice cream seemed to have some special meaning for me and my friends and when we got old enough to go to the place on our bikes where we could buy ourselves an ice cream cone, we knew then and there that we were adults and knew how to enjoy life with our ice cream cone in our hand, and after we finished eating the cone ride back home from our big adventure …. The world was ours and that was because of the great ice cream cone that we had just eaten! I love ice cream

Ice cream still tastes great and nowadays there are lots of flavors to choose from, so there is a sort for everyone. How many flavors there are I can’t tell you, but it is a lot!

Either way, somehow ice cream always seems to bring back great memories and eating ice cream is one great thing a lot of us seem to have in common. Enjoy your ice cream!

Outboard Motor Memoires

This is sort of a guy topic, but I am sure some of you gals know about this too.

The other day was the anniversary of Mr. Evinrude the man who invented the outboard motor years ago.

I thank Mr. Evinrude because without his invention I wouldn’t have been able to spend so many wonderful hours on a lake when I was a kid. That outboard motor attached to the back of the small boat that helped us get from our dock to someplace else on the lake was wonderful…..

I remember when the time came when my dad built a bigger boat and then bought a larger outboard motor, but still the joy of being out on the lake fishing or just being out there with my dad was great! And all that thanks to an outboard motor.

Sure we rowed around too in a smaller boat because we weren’t old enough to drive a big boat, but who cared…. Not me!!! The main thing was being outside enjoying the sunshine and water. Years pasted and we needed a new outboard motor (sorry, the brand name …I can’t remember).

But still the trusty outboard motor did its job…okay sometimes it wouldn’t start on the first, second or even the third pull because the motor got flooded and my dad would get really upset and use words I won’t repeat….. But, I learned some new words from those trying moments…Thanks dad!!

Or another time out fishing and my dad wanted to “start her up” as he would say and pulled the cord and it snapped….. Now that was something 2 miles from our dock and we had to paddle the whole way back…. I thought it was great fun, but not my dad as you can imagine!!!

Once back on shore I had to tell my mom all about the fun we had and my dad was about to explode because of the “GD-outboard motor”, and to make matters worse I asked my dad what “GD” meant….definitely a bad move on my part!!!

When I think back about all those great times I had I feel sorry for the Kids today because they aren’t allowed to do things alone anymore…. Like me and my friends out catching minnows with a net and rowing around the lake for hours…. No one worried about us and we were free to enjoy ourselves , but we never did anything stupid either and were responsible , or we walked around the lake on a path along the edge of the lake…… no problems, no injuries….just plain fun!!!

It was better that any computer game and taught us self-confidence , social skills and how to remember how to get from A to B and back without GPS or calling someone for help.

Those were the days, and if you have an outboard motor and boat…. Enjoy it and cherish the memories that it brings you!

Sunny days are on the way…

Windy Weather

I am just sitting here listening to the wind outside and how it seems to be howling around the corners of the house.

There was a kids rhyme(poem) once wasn’t there about wind in the springtime??? Or have I gotten it mixed up with another season???? But I know it has to do with windy weather and even in spring we can have snow…Burrrr

And because it is so windy outside I think I will dedicate this little poem (Author unknown) to all the poor little birds outside having to weather this windy weather… Poor things!!

The north wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will poor robin do then?
Poor thing!
He’ll sit in the barn,
And keep himself warm,
And hide his head under his wing.
Poor thing!

I hope that not too many little birds lose their nests on this very windy day of spring!

Autumn Leaves

Looking out the window at all those wonderful colored leaves on the trees and seeing them slowly swaying in the wind and then just letting themselves go from the tree and sailing through the air to land softly on the ground… oh those lovely leaves of fall as you send us your greetings to tell us that colder weather is on its way.

There the trees stand no more birds in their nests just a lonely tree bare of its leaves stands there so proudly waiting for some bird to land on its branch and say hello. Not many people put real thought anymore into what happens with the change of season or notices that how lovely the trees are with their leaves a glow in the lovely colors of fall.

As a kid I remember every fall my dad hopped into the car with my mom and me and we drove off for the day just to look at the wonderful colors of the leaves on the trees… oh they were so lovely and bright, or at least they seem so in my memories. The tall majestic trees that were in the countryside and you could drive for miles just looking at all the colors that were abound and sometimes not see another car or person for hours. Those were the wonderful days of fall!

I have great memories of fall and of raking those dreaded leaves too. I always thought as a kid those leaves fell from the tree just to make me work!

My parents would say to me “Now, go outside and rake some of those leaves into piles”. That was a sentence that I hated to hear… those piles of leaves were bigger then me… We had thousands of leaves and they were only there on the ground for me to rake into piles….and then a gust of wind would come along and blow my wonderful piles of leaves away only to hear my dad say.. “Well, you have to start again”. I think the leaves on the ground were invented as a way to keep small kids out of the house so the parents could have their peace and quiet!!!

I hated those leaves and it seemed that the trees had an endless supply of leaves, because there were always leaves to be found in the yard no matter how good I raked!! I personally thought back then that the trees had gotten together in a conspiracy to shed all their leaves in our yard so I would have to rake them into piles.

Oh the fall leaves and their colors and wonderful memories they have left me with of raking them into piles… Enjoy the wonderful colored leaves that the trees are sharing with us!

Reading a Nice Book

Reading is a great thing to do whether it be for pleasure or work… reading enriches our minds. But as it was recently brought to my attention that many adults today still can’t read properly.. A very sad state indeed.

Reading is fun and a person can learn to read at any age or to read better. It’s a bit like riding your bicycle- practice, practice, and practice until you get the hang of it.

Remember as a kid you practiced riding your bike until you got the hang of it and didn’t give up because you fell off your bike, you got back on it and tried again. Learning to read better is the same. Open up that book, see what is inside then start reading and those odd or strange words that are not understood can be looked up in a dictionary and there in that book the dictionary you can learn more words opening up a whole new world that one never thought about. Curiosity and success in one.

I can remember learning to read, and I couldn’t wait sometimes to get home from school to read a book that I was reading or to start reading a new book that I had gotten from the library… Those books launched me into a world of ideas, creativity and places that were far beyond my dreams. To put it simply -> It was great!

My first book in school and I am sure some of you out there had it too. Dick & Jane… Now that was reading at its finest! A happy family, a happy dog and what more did a young person need to launch you into the wonders of reading????
I thank Dick & Jane for enlightening me and the teacher who so patiently listened to us read out loud those wonderful pages from that book. The stimulus that it brought to my brain, saying “Hey, reading is fun!”

Reading today is so easy. You can read things online, ebooks , paperback books or hardcover books. The choice is endless and there is something there for every taste nowadays. People should take advantage of all these great ways to read.

Everyone regrets not having done something in their lives, but you never hear anyone saying “ If I had only read that book.” Maybe more people should think about reading and then we wouldn’t read such sad facts that soooo many people cannot read properly anymore.

So get out a good book and start reading and you will be surprised at how enjoyable a book really can be!

A Daily Dose of Problems & Worries

Who ever thought that there would be so many problems and worries when we get older?? Most of us never expected that, because when I look back at my childhood I only have carefree memories of playing with friends, doing all sorts of great things with my parents and going to school to prepare me for life…. I never had a worry in the world, and I am sure I am not speaking for myself here either.

Life was simply great as a kid for me!!!

Nowadays, so many people are confronted with mounting daily problems that they just don’t know where to look. The worst is they lose their jobs and have no income which makes them worry about “ How can I make ends meet?” And there is where both problems and worries collide with each other….. How sad

How can I pay my mortgage or rent?

How can I make my monthly car payment?

How can I pay my telephone bill?

How can I pay my electricity bill?

Will I have enough money left for buying groceries?

And that list could be endless if I kept writing, but I thought I would stop there. Those thoughts could really make one really worry and drive a person into the ruins; a state that no one may have dreamed of in their whole life…… How sad

We were brought up to follow our dreams and they would come true… but with problems and worries people tend to be more realistic and throw their dreams away. It is sort of like sitting in a bathtub and the water is going down the drain and you can’t find the stopper fast enough to stop the water from going down the drain…. How sad

Will there ever be a day without problems and worries where we can all sit back and enjoy life like it was one time before when the days were always sunny and life was so carefree…. I hope so and so never give up believing in yourself and somewhere behind that dark cloud will be the sunshine that you are looking for.
