The Essentials

Those two words you read everywhere nowadays „ The essentials“; either for the house, your life or whatever you need „ the essentials“or your life isn’t complete! The ceiling may cave in any second now without my essentials ….. ahhhhhh

I got looking at all these essential things that I supposedly need, well to be honest those essentials are not so essential to my daily life and all those life hacks which are the old things grandmothers/ grandparents once told us or showed us, and so I haven’t learned a thing but it is an essential life hack. The word usage is interesting too. Years ago wasn’t it called: Tips of a better life or money-saving ideas or how to do things better and easier, and even save time in the kitchen with these handy tips…. Nowadays everything is a hack… but was does “hack” really mean?
I looked it up and found many meanings and its use as a word, but still the use of the words seems to have changed… wasn’t it one time “inventive or ingenious “ if you did a certain thing with just a few necessary things to repair something???? And what is” essential”… isn’t that from a point of view and not from trying to sell me something???

With “hacking” I’ll use it for hacking vegetables or being successful at something and not for the other things the word is associated with. And for “ the essentials” I think I have them all and if I don’t well I will survive without them, because I have so far and didn’t know that I was missing the essentials …… whatever they are. But with the Sunday ads in the newspapers for all those essentials that are missing in my life I just don’t know where to start????

I looked at the first flyer for everything for the house…. What do I need??? Or do I even have space for any of that stuff…. Good question! Then the next flyer for stuff at the drugstore…. How many deodorants do I need or bottles of shampoo, and then there’s the grocery store flyer with all the essential stuff too, but do I need to buy all that stuff and some of it I don’t even eat either ; now what???

But everything is essential, so I put the flyers down and started reading the newspaper and there I was confronted by a full-page ad for a new suitcase (an essential) if I was traveling…. It would be an OMG to be seen with a suitcase that was say 5 years old and what would the neighbors think if they saw that too…. There I am walking out to the taxi and everyone is pointing at me and sees my 5 year old suitcase and they all know that I was too cheap to purchase the essential one in the news paper ad….. All I can say is “that would be a bad suitcase day!”.

I turn the page of the paper hoping not to be confronted with another essential….. my hands are shaking and I feel nervous with this thought , but there on the next page I only have articles to read…. I feel better but I know when I turn the page that another essential will be staring at me and then what….. Close the paper and throw it on the floor or quickly turn the page hoping that that essential is not an essential for me…. I will chance it and so sorry I have to finish here, because I know there are some essential things and articles in the paper that I want to see or read!

Enjoy your day… with or without the hacks and essentials!

Puttering Around………

I got to thinking this morning how it always rains when you take a couple of days off from work …… Why is that?????
I somehow think the clouds and weather have a direct connection to the management department and plan together that, if I have off it should rain, so that they don’t feel so bad because they have to work…… An interesting theory ……. Don’t you think?

Well, I got this wiz bang idea to clean a room and hoe out the junk and I managed!!! Believe me it wasn’t easy, but now all the junk is in the hallway, but I must say the other room looks good!! And because it is raining outside, I can’t put the stuff outside either for awhile; while I sort the other stuff out!!! Bad luck somehow..

I really wasn’t planning on sorting stuff out; I wanted to be outside enjoying the summer weather and showing off my summer wardrobe, but “NO” it has to rain!!

Back to puttering around, sitting here thinking about it my grandmother was always “puttering around” the house, and when I asked her “What are you doing?” She would answer “puttering around”. Though I never understood it really… It was like she moved things around the house or straightened things up on the coffee table. I know the word “puttering around” is a bit dated, but I like the word, because you can do 20 things at once with no worries because you are “puttering around”…

So I’ll stick to the word “puttering around”, and since I started writing this; I’ve stopped to unload the washing machine, talked on the phone to a friend come back to write a bit more here, stopped again for a cup of coffee, looked at the newspaper. Wrote a bit more here, looked at the stuff in the hallway and I’ll “putter around” some more too.

To be honest “puttering around” on a rainy day isn’t that bad at all, as long as you have something to “putter around”…..
The thought is: When someone asks you “What did you do at home all day?” Your answer: “I was puttering around.”

And the person that asked that question won’t have the slightest idea of what you are talking about….

Enjoy “Puttering Around”!!!

Advice Headlines

I got to looking at advice headlines online for a bit of a change in my reading style…. Not that I am looking for advice but I wanted to read about what concerns other people.

There was the guy in love with someone he works with….. To me that seems like trouble and if everyone in the office knows about it… I think this problem answers itself… It could be that he is like a little boy in love…Staring out the window dreaming of the tender moments that he could share with that person or he is texting that person with poems and dreams of their love that will never be…. My advice to the guy: get focused and sort yourself out! Get a foot back on the ground and forget it; I would not want to lose my job because of some silliness.

Taking a short nap at work… Now that is a great idea! Arrange to have a nap every afternoon from say 1:00pm to 4:00pm and then once rested up you can go home at 5:00pm. Life couldn’t be better….. Please where can I apply for that job and does it pay well?

Now this is an all time great: My garden …. And how that fits with the other two I am not sure and can only presume that it is something like this: Guy is at work having a nap and dreaming about the person he is in love with at work. There you have it. A lovely flower garden idyllic, birds singing and lovely trees the feeling of tranquility is in the air they are there in each other’s arms; when suddenly the boss comes in and screams “ What the h…. are you doing, sleeping on my time?” . Bad idea napping at work!

Another daunting thought: someone thinks everyone is against them… Okay, that’s bad, but it can’t be true. I know everyone doesn’t like me and to be honest it doesn’t bother me either. I would say…Stop worrying and get on with things, before you miss out on all the great things that are happening in life!

A real one: Problems in the bedroom….. OMG!!! I don’t think a news paper can help that couple or the guy dreaming at work (I am not too sure who they were writing about). They need to seek professional help or talk to each other like folks did one time… that could help too. Let’s see what happens and find out who it is????

The normal one some famous person…. Bla,bla, bla boring… I want action like the topics above!!!

But once I read all those tidbits of advice I didn’t and don’t feel any the wiser and I wonder do the people who wrote in feel any better about the response that they received and did the guy in love at work solve his problem and did he get in trouble for taking a nap????
These are unanswered questions and I feel like I am left hanging here… I want to know how the guy’s life is going and was it him with the bedroom problems…. Please people answer my questions, so that I know advice can be real and have real results!

Take my advice and read all the wonderful bits of advice, but be careful, they may not give you the answer you were looking for!

Icy Ice Cream

Nothing better than ice cream in the summer and the fact that it is national ice cream month somewhere in the world makes it even better….. I love ice cream!!

Sitting here thinking about the ice cream makes me think back to the long summer days when I was a kid and the great ice cream that I ate, and the big event of going out somewhere to have an ice cream was indescribable, because it was such a treat and so it made having ice cream all the better.

Nowadays, I don’t think ice cream is a real treat anymore like it was back then. Ice cream brought a highlight into my week and it was something to look forward to and I know it was the same for my friends too. Ice cream was special for us….

There was one place I remember that had soft ice cream …. The big choice: chocolate or vanilla but you could have a topping on the ice cream cone or a sundae with some hard to describe super sweet topping of either chocolate or strawberry … Not that the toppings weren’t made of artificial ingredients as was the fad back then… it was simply a great tasting treat and who cared about what it was made of…. I only saw the ice cream and the topping and it was great!!!

Or there was some other place not far from our house, where you could go into the ice cream parlor and sit down and order a sundae and it was served in a glass looking like a big wine glass (I felt so sophisticated and grown-up) , two scoops of ice cream and gobs of hot fudge poured over it and some whipped cream and topped off with a cherry…. That was the ultimate in the ice cream world in my eyes back then…..

Though there was some stiff completion out there as to where had the best ice cream and those places were on the ball when it came to creating something using ice cream!

Some ingeniously integrated ice cream into their menu with the root beer float that had a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a glass of root beer, or the other one; a glass of soda pop and a scoop of ice cream in it. That was living at its best and nothing could possibly be better than that in the summer.

Ice cream seemed to have some special meaning for me and my friends and when we got old enough to go to the place on our bikes where we could buy ourselves an ice cream cone, we knew then and there that we were adults and knew how to enjoy life with our ice cream cone in our hand, and after we finished eating the cone ride back home from our big adventure …. The world was ours and that was because of the great ice cream cone that we had just eaten! I love ice cream

Ice cream still tastes great and nowadays there are lots of flavors to choose from, so there is a sort for everyone. How many flavors there are I can’t tell you, but it is a lot!

Either way, somehow ice cream always seems to bring back great memories and eating ice cream is one great thing a lot of us seem to have in common. Enjoy your ice cream!

What to Wear??

That is always a good question for us gals…What to wear or better said: What should I wear when I go out after? My closet is crammed full with fashionable items or at least in my eyes…. Maybe I should get my eyes checked then get back to you…..

But the 2015 summer fashion season has just begun and there are thousands of tips tricks and new or so they say styles out there just waiting for me. I want to be fashionable!! Though I must be honest some look the same as last summer only the price has changed and the color for 2015.

Now being a gal of frugal means I always take a closer look at all those great things on offer before making that all important decision as to what to buy for summer 2015. I have this dilemma every year and somehow it always seems to creep-up on me unexpectedly without warning… I am sure some of you gals out there know what I am talking about??? There is the new pair or pairs of sandals, maybe a dress or two, shorts, tops, bathing suits, and so forth…. Plus, the matching make-up too.
Summers can be stressful!!

But as a gal who wants to be somewhat trendy I started taking a closer look at the fashion pages online and discovered some things that I already own, and that is for years now… So, I surfed a bit more only to be confronted again with things that I already own…. Okay the color is different, but the style is the same!! There you go…. A major problem is brewing and the season isn’t even in full swing yet!!!

Of course I could always get advice from friends or other people, but what they like isn’t always what I like and how do you tell your friends that you don’t like what they have picked out without hurting their feelings??? I am sure you can relate to that…..

Plus, I need a bank loan to buy all that stuff… Sandals: $ 600.00, Shorts: $ 245.00, Hat: $ 165.00, Dress: $95.00 (cheap…. Buy 2), and last but not least a summer sweater for $ 308.00 …… And I still don’t have a bathing suit and the worst part is now there is no money left over for my summer vacation….. But I have expensive clothes and I hope everyone will notice that I paid a small fortune for them too!!!! Please note the labels, so you know that I am a cool person!! Coolness here I come…..

Though maybe I could do without the hat and wear my hat from last year…. Do you think anyone would notice???? Probably not, so I’ll take the chance and wear it this year too. I feel better already by saving a bit of money…… But still the thought is lingering in the back of my mind…. I want to go on vacation, so it is either cool clothes or a cool vacation……. I think I have to think about this before I decide on looking cool or visiting a cool place….

No hasty decisions ….. Think about it!!

Shopping for shoes…. A worrying or trying job?

After reading an article about where women’s shoes are placed on shelves of shoe stores; it got me thinking and of course as a gal I rushed out to the nearest shoe store to take a look at where all the shoes were placed according to size.

What I mean is top shelf small sizes or are there stores with large sizes first….. The challenges of trying to find a pair of shoes and now with summer approaching there are the summer styles too.

OMG… I feel stressed out before evening looking for my size. Now where I live sneakers are all the rage in every style and color and price range. Okay, sneakers are nice and comfortable, but I as a gal don’t want to wear them with every outfit… Shoe makers take heed!!!

Then as I looked through the rows of sneakers … of course they were the first to see when I entered the shoe store and yes, small sizes on the top shelf and larger sizes place on the lower shelves…. Bigger your foot the more you need to bend-over to find your size. But all those sneakers staring at me didn’t have that “ flare” that is needed to compel me to buy them. Plus the sandal styles are almost exactly the same as last year…. Now what??? I bought a new pair Last year and they still look like new…. Okay, don’t tell anyone or they may point down at my sandals and say “ Ah, last year’s style”….. A traumatizing thought indeed.

As a gal I need those sandals or maybe even a pair of sneakers before the warm weather comes. What would happen if a warm day fell upon us and there I was out and about without my sandals on or my new summer sneakers??? I hope I don’t get any gray hairs from this worrying thought!!!

I have looked and searched the shelves of endless shoe stores only to leave them in a bewildered state thinking to myself…. “Where should I go next or just say the heck with it and go home?” But my shoe money is burning a hole in my pocket… I have to buy a new pair or else be crowned the wearer of last summer’s shoe style.. HELP

Shoes are always screaming out at me no matter where I turn or where I am… on TV commercials, in magazines or on billboards…. SHOES… SNEAKERS saying buy me you need me and you will look good any have lots of friends if you wear these. What do I do now??? Confusion is twirling around in my brain… I need all those shoes… I want to be cool and have thousands of friends; Okay maybe thousands of friends is a bit over doing it, but not being cool… OMG!!

The perils of shopping for shoes! I hope you find the pair you are looking for… and enjoy them

Outboard Motor Memoires

This is sort of a guy topic, but I am sure some of you gals know about this too.

The other day was the anniversary of Mr. Evinrude the man who invented the outboard motor years ago.

I thank Mr. Evinrude because without his invention I wouldn’t have been able to spend so many wonderful hours on a lake when I was a kid. That outboard motor attached to the back of the small boat that helped us get from our dock to someplace else on the lake was wonderful…..

I remember when the time came when my dad built a bigger boat and then bought a larger outboard motor, but still the joy of being out on the lake fishing or just being out there with my dad was great! And all that thanks to an outboard motor.

Sure we rowed around too in a smaller boat because we weren’t old enough to drive a big boat, but who cared…. Not me!!! The main thing was being outside enjoying the sunshine and water. Years pasted and we needed a new outboard motor (sorry, the brand name …I can’t remember).

But still the trusty outboard motor did its job…okay sometimes it wouldn’t start on the first, second or even the third pull because the motor got flooded and my dad would get really upset and use words I won’t repeat….. But, I learned some new words from those trying moments…Thanks dad!!

Or another time out fishing and my dad wanted to “start her up” as he would say and pulled the cord and it snapped….. Now that was something 2 miles from our dock and we had to paddle the whole way back…. I thought it was great fun, but not my dad as you can imagine!!!

Once back on shore I had to tell my mom all about the fun we had and my dad was about to explode because of the “GD-outboard motor”, and to make matters worse I asked my dad what “GD” meant….definitely a bad move on my part!!!

When I think back about all those great times I had I feel sorry for the Kids today because they aren’t allowed to do things alone anymore…. Like me and my friends out catching minnows with a net and rowing around the lake for hours…. No one worried about us and we were free to enjoy ourselves , but we never did anything stupid either and were responsible , or we walked around the lake on a path along the edge of the lake…… no problems, no injuries….just plain fun!!!

It was better that any computer game and taught us self-confidence , social skills and how to remember how to get from A to B and back without GPS or calling someone for help.

Those were the days, and if you have an outboard motor and boat…. Enjoy it and cherish the memories that it brings you!

Sunny days are on the way…

Hot Coals …. BBQing

Well it is that time of year again when everyone seems to be getting out their BBQ’s and getting them ready for the official BBQ season….. Whenever that is; I really don’t know but it seems to be in the air.

It seems like a ritual for so many guys to get the BBQ out and set it-up.. what there is to set-up really doesn’t take longer than 30 minutes but the ritual itself must be observed and so with the whole to do it will take guys a couple of hours before the whole process is finished.
This I mean firstly, by finding the BBQ… it could bite you because it is right in front of you in the garage, but it still has to be found. Then there is the bringing it outside to clean it up again, even though this was done in the fall before it was put away…. It’s dirty again for sure, because maybe at Christmas time when Santa stopped by he was hungry and lit-up the BBQ for a quick steak before he made his way to the next house….. One has to be careful.

Now the orders have to be given to the female members of the household who are in charge of the buying of the food and preparing the salads and what not that is together with this BBQ event. Really one does not just BBQ there is a science in it even if one doesn’t want to admit it.

Have you ever seen a group of gals standing alone around a BBQ and the guys just relaxing doing nothing and hoping that the gals will grill the steaks right???? I never have and believe me I have been BBQing for years and in many countries and nowhere have I ever seen gals in charge of the BBQ….

It is sort of like a guy thing I would say… Bringing guys back to the beginning of time when everything was cooked over an open fire and they all stood there and exchanged their stories of adventure knowing that here standing by the BBQ is where the roots of civilization began… Now you know!!!

The gals nowadays drive to the grocery store and forage the aisles for the food needed that will be placed on the grill.. Not exactly an easy task either and steer the shopping trolley through the maze to find the right ingredients and then aim for the beverage section in the hopes of finding the right beverages for that meal…. It all sounds so easy but in reality there are hours of work involved in the short time where the guy(s) stand beside the BBQ and cook the food and take credit for the whole logistics of the evening….

Without the back-office of the BBQ event there would be no BBQing. This section seems to be overlooked sometimes and should not be forgotten about and so I think a big thank you should be said to all those who have spent hours preparing for their BBQ and no one said “Wow, you prepared this all by yourself.” And when I think about the hours my mom spent preparing for those couple of hours of BBQing and especially in the 60’s & 70’s with some of those exotic recipes that were abound was unbelievable…

Here is a little taste of what was popular back then.. I have an old cookbook from my mom with those great favorites of the day:

Hawaiian salad, Old-Fashioned jellied Coleslaw, Good Potato salad ( I never knew there was a bad one), Cottage Cheese Jelly Salad ,and the all time favorite.. Macaroni Salad.

Those are just to name a few and every salad somehow had Jello in it or some other sweet ingredient that was indescribable and we ate it with joy because there was no use complaining anyway!! Mom’s word was the last word when it came to eating what was put in front of you on the picnic table… Dad was the guy in charge of the BBQ and those roles were very distinct and not only in our house it was like that wherever you went.

People say times are changing but one ritual seems to have stayed the same throughout the years and that is BBQing.

But before I end this little post I would like to share with all of you an interesting somewhat unusual recipe from back then from some magazine clipping that was in the cookbook.

Favorite Salad (the name is interesting – I wonder who’s favorite it was??)

1-#2 can applesauce
1-7oz bottle 7-up
1-3 oz. pkg. lime gelatin
½ pt. whipping cream
1-3 oz. pkg. cream cheese
¼ lb. miniature marshmallows

Heat applesauce. Dissolve gelatin in sauce. Cool. Add 7-up. Stir well. Put into mold. Chill until set. Put cheese and marshmallows into bowl. Pour cream over marshmallows and cream cheese. Let stand in refrigerator overnight. Next day, beat cream mixture until thick and creamy. Spread over first layer.

Now that is what I call a salad!!! If anyone does make it, please by all means let me know how it tastes!!

Enjoy BBQing no matter who is cooking the food and maybe try one of those great recipes from back then to bring a bit of change into your salads being served and impress your friends at the same time too…

Sunny Screen

The sunny days of summer and sun screen seem to go together somehow. Now-a-days we use sunscreen to protect our skin from those harmful rays just waiting or lurking outside our homes to say to our skin – “Are you using sunscreen?” And if not than wait a couple of hours and you’ll look like a lobster…

When I was a kid no one every really thought about how those rays from the sun could do damage to our skin. It was more like let’s see how red can we get and in the evening be in excruciating pain from the sunburn… But no one ever said it was bad for us.. Just the opposite “Fresh air & sunshine will do you good.” Or maybe some of you remember the baby oil crazy where everyone thought putting that on your skin was good too… Then again not thinking that it may be working like a magnifying glass.

Those were the days of pure nativity and we had fun!
No worries- mom just pushed me outside for the day and said wear your hat so your face doesn’t get too red. I was happy to oblige and run around in the great sunny weather and enjoy life. Do kids do that today?? I wonder sometimes, because I don’t see them outside playing like we did years ago…. Somehow it all seems so sad.

Now, first the kids have to have the right clothing on then creamed-up with sunscreen and then given instructions and then are allowed to go outside..Boy ,if I had to experience that before going outside as a kid I would have definitely been impatient and run out of the house because I would have been worried that I would have missed out on the action with the other kids, and that was definitely something to worry about and not worrying if I had sunscreen on my skin!! Priorities that’s what it was …..

I remember a friend I used to hang around with and she was a permanent red in the summer but that was healthy her mom used to say… Naturally we all were various shades of red. You just had to line us up and there you had it…. I mean from lobster red to a pale pink, so we covered the color spectrum really good. Sunburn was fun and we could prove it!

Those sunny days and the mean rays from the sun just burning away at our skin brought joy to us and we could compare our sunburns too. Who was the reddest or who was the palest( bad)… that meant you weren’t allowed outside because you were grounded for doing some minor thing (major thing back then) like saying something bad or even worse hitting someone

Oh those sunny summer days of sunbathing without the proper sunscreen are gone forever, because now I have to worry about those vicious rays ruining my skin as soon as I take one step out the door and the aging which it does to my skin too. It never did any of that years ago. Has the sun taken a disliking to me?

So, don’t forget before you go outside next time to use sunscreen or else those harmful rays from the sun could damage your skin now-a-days.

Those were the Days!

Below is something I just wanted to share with you that I got from my Aunt, and because I think it’s good for a laugh but brings back those great memories of those carefree childhood days. Enjoy reading and I hope it brings a smile to your face!

All the girls had ugly gym uniforms? And wore tennis shoes not $200 Nike’s!

It took three minutes for the TV to warm up.

Nobody owned a purebred dog.

When a quarter was a decent allowance.

You’d reach into a muddy gutter for a penny.

Your Mom wore nylons that came in two pieces.

You got your windshield cleaned, oil checked, and gas pumped, without asking, all for free, every time. And you didn’t pay for air? And, you got trading stamps to boot.

Laundry detergent had free glasses, dishes or towels hidden inside the box.

It was considered a great privilege to be taken out to dinner at a real restaurant with your parents.

They threatened to keep kids back a grade if they failed… and they did it!

When a 57 Chevy was everyone’s dream car…to cruise, peel out, lay rubber or watch submarine races, and people went steady.

No one ever asked where the car keys were because they were always in the car, in the ignition, and the doors were never locked.

Lying on your back in the grass with your friends… and saying things like, ‘That cloud looks like a… ‘.

Playing baseball with no adults to help kids with the rules of the game.

Stuff from the store came without safety caps and hermetic seals because no one had yet tried to poison a perfect stranger…

And with all our progress, don’t you just wish, just once, you could slip back in time and savor the slower pace, and share it with the children of today.

When being sent to the principal’s office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited the student at home.

Basically we were in fear for our lives, but it wasn’t because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! But we survived because their love was greater than the threat.

And our summers were filled with bike rides, Hula Hoops, and visits to the pool, and eating Kool-Aid powder with sugar.

Didn’t that feel good, just to go back and say, ‘Yeah, I remember that’.
