Time For A Change

Four great words that we hear a lot nowadays, but who really changes???? Change can be so many things and what should change is always a question that requires a bit of thought before one changes…

Now with spring just waiting out there somewhere for us and all the Easter decorations are now being sold in the stores it can mean only one thing… spring is on its way and now it is time to start with the spring cleaning or at least the idea is good…
I have been thinking about the topic of spring cleaning and changing things around maybe or throwing some of my unwanted treasures out that you can barely see because they are hidden under an inch of dust…

Now that is something we collect whether we like it or not… our friend “DUST” and it seems that everyone collects it too and it is not just something that a certain group of people have either…. Dust sort of gives us all something in common; even if you don’t want to admit it!

Because I bet you have dust at your house too, just like I do!

I find nobody ever takes the time to think about that inch of dust that has accumulated on their books or nick-knacks and if dust could talk I am sure it could tell us some really interesting tales too. As dust is always presented as something that you must hate and always try to tackle it with the latest cleaning gadget or duster or whatever… Dust has turned into one of the most hated things in our households….

I dislike dust too just like the next person but I will not let it get the best of me either…. So, that means making some changes, but what do I change and what do I throw-out??? All that stuff even if it is a dust collector has great memories attached to it, and it is so hard to part with those loving memories… I feel like if I throw those dust collectors out I am throwing a part of myself away and that I can’t do… But it is time for a change. Yes, the change will be that I will dust and so then I can see what is under the dust. And after I can see what was hidden under the layer of dust then I won’t want to change.

I notice on TV that every house they show has no dust in it and wonder how do they manage that??? Do they have a team of people on call to tackle the dust right away as soon as it is seen???? Or the neighborhoods shown on TV too that are all shiny – do they have a dust patrol just waiting for dust and then go after it before it gets a chance to settle on something??? What happened to having something in common with other people…. DUST

I bought one of those things the other day that you can run over the table or such and the dust will stick to it like a magnet… Well, I guess after awhile the magnet part said the heck with it and seemed to let the dust lay there or just seems to make it move to another section on the bookcase… I guess dust just likes my house, so I will have to think of another change as to how to say good-bye to the winter dust and welcome the spring dust…. Always questions that need to be answered

Enjoy dusting !

Reading a Nice Book

Reading is a great thing to do whether it be for pleasure or work… reading enriches our minds. But as it was recently brought to my attention that many adults today still can’t read properly.. A very sad state indeed.

Reading is fun and a person can learn to read at any age or to read better. It’s a bit like riding your bicycle- practice, practice, and practice until you get the hang of it.

Remember as a kid you practiced riding your bike until you got the hang of it and didn’t give up because you fell off your bike, you got back on it and tried again. Learning to read better is the same. Open up that book, see what is inside then start reading and those odd or strange words that are not understood can be looked up in a dictionary and there in that book the dictionary you can learn more words opening up a whole new world that one never thought about. Curiosity and success in one.

I can remember learning to read, and I couldn’t wait sometimes to get home from school to read a book that I was reading or to start reading a new book that I had gotten from the library… Those books launched me into a world of ideas, creativity and places that were far beyond my dreams. To put it simply -> It was great!

My first book in school and I am sure some of you out there had it too. Dick & Jane… Now that was reading at its finest! A happy family, a happy dog and what more did a young person need to launch you into the wonders of reading????
I thank Dick & Jane for enlightening me and the teacher who so patiently listened to us read out loud those wonderful pages from that book. The stimulus that it brought to my brain, saying “Hey, reading is fun!”

Reading today is so easy. You can read things online, ebooks , paperback books or hardcover books. The choice is endless and there is something there for every taste nowadays. People should take advantage of all these great ways to read.

Everyone regrets not having done something in their lives, but you never hear anyone saying “ If I had only read that book.” Maybe more people should think about reading and then we wouldn’t read such sad facts that soooo many people cannot read properly anymore.

So get out a good book and start reading and you will be surprised at how enjoyable a book really can be!

Take A Look At My Book

Yah, why not – take a look at my book. Reading is a great pastime for many and normally we read the book alone and enjoy every word that is written. Ok, that only holds true when you really enjoy the book and if the books not tooooooo interesting well; I just skim through it and that’s it and then it’s sent off into the world of used books that maybe someone else can enjoy????

But times are changing the days of relaxing on your sofa with a good book or Ereader( modern times) could be about to change when all your other friends have Ereader’s too. A little social reader network and you are all logged into one book reading together… now that’s what I call progress in the wrong direction!!!! When I read I like to read my book myself and not have 5 other people reading with me and this could be up setting too because we all read at different speeds, but then again when we all read the same book at the same time there must be a timer for each page and so everyone has say 2 minutes per page…. No day dreaming it’s……READING TIME!!!!

The days of lounging around are over!!!

Plus the great thing is you can add comments about what you just read and every one of your friends can join in too. This makes reading a whole new thing to do. You don’t just sit around with a dull book in your hand you can write your opinion or maybe even say that your thinking about making a cup of coffee too. This put a whole new spot light on the word “ READING”

But I do see some minor problems that could arise while one of your friends is the official book person and the rest are reading along with you. Now I am sure you have all experienced this at one time or another and don’t be embarrassed either…. But falling asleep on the sofa while reading.

Normally nothing to worry about; your laying on the sofa reading and you doze off for a bit. But now that you are in charge of the book that you and your friends are reading….. What happens???? They have to wait until you wake-up or what( this answer I don’t know)
There you are waiting patiently for your friend to wake back-up so you can read on. How could they do that, right when the book was just getting good… They fall asleep… some friend, if you ask me!! Call them up right-a-way to wake them up, so that you can carry on reading… cheeky if you ask me- falling asleep!

And another slightly annoying thought is… what if I read at a time when you don’t want to read; then what??? Though it could be that since it’s “MY BOOK” you have to read when I want too … no questions asked!!!
My book – My times
Then again, I think reading is a private thing and when I read I like to enjoy the book and not be interrupted or if I fall asleep on the sofa… who cares – the fond memories of reading alone…. those were the days!!!

A very positive point about such a device is that when your guy or gal is reading and you want their attention… forget the “old fashioned” way of talking to each other… NO, write a note so it pops-up in the book that their reading and I am sure if you write the right thing you will get their undivided attention and maybe hear some comments that shouldn’t be repeated here… if you know what I mean????

There my guy is reading away at one of his “guy” magazines and I would like him to help me. Normally, if I say something to him while he is reading and he says “ after honey, you know I’m reading” As if he thinks I’m blind!!!!

I don’t need to aggravate myself anymore. I just log-onto his book and write my message so he can read it… problem solved – or???? But somehow I don’t really see the situation getting any better than if I said something. If anyone out there has tired one of these deceives do let me know how it works when it comes to getting your partner to do something… Thanks!

Unfortunately, I think I will stick to reading my book alone and only share it with friends when I have finished reading it. But whatever way you choose to read is up to you… the main thing is that you enjoy what you are reading.

Enjoy reading!!

Sleigh Bells are Ringing

Oh there are only 10 until those sleigh bells can be heard outside your house and Santa will slide down your chimney and fill your stocking. I hope everyone has been good this year and not misbehaved…….

DSCF1674

Those were great times when I was I kid crossing off the days on the calendar and hoping that I wouldn’t do anything that would upset Santa Claus… I wanted him to stop by our house and so for me being good in December was on top of my list and not to forget the mile long wish list that I wrote too with all the stuff that I thought I needed.
When I think back to the things that I wished for it seems light years away because when I see what kids wish for today my toys seemed so dull and boring to them. But for me they were action packed with adventure and brought me and my friends’ hours of fun!!! I loved my toys

DSCF1675

There on my list when I was young were dolls and a baby buggy or some great piece of clothing to dress my doll in or a cassette with some cool music on it (Cassette – what’s that????) or there were the wonderful books full of adventure that took place in unknown places around the world – making my fascination run wild and letting me be part of something that I wouldn’t experience at home. Sometimes a dress would be under the tree that I could wear on Christmas day. Do little girls still wear those??? Santa was always so thoughtful. Or if I was really lucky there would be all kinds of chocolate stuffed in my stocking and the healthy orange( that was something that was always in it)…… oh those wonderful childhood memories!!!

I knew on Christmas Eve that when I placed the note beside the plate of cookies and a glass of milk on the kitchen table for Santa that there would be some great things in store for me on Christmas day…… Though sometimes I was soooooo excited that it seemed to take ages to fall asleep and my mom would always say “You must try to sleep or Santa won’t stop by.” How could she say that??? I was so excited about that jolly guy stopping by our house that I just couldn’t fall asleep; but sooner or later I did and would wake up and go down stairs to see a wonderfully lit Christmas tree and all the presents from Santa Claus under it. And Santa was such a great guy that he always left something for our dog Cesar too! So, I knew the Cesar must have been friends with Santa.

DSCF1673

So, I am just going to count the days now and make my wish list and hope that all my wishes come true even though I know that guy Santa Claus says I am toooooo old but hey, Who said you can’t enjoy the spirit of Santa at any age.?

Camping memories

Summer is slowly coming to an end and the days are getting shorter and that got me to thinking about my times as a kid when I used to camp-out in the back yard in my pup tent with my friends. Those were the days.. Three girls and a Great Dane in a three man tent!

There we were professional campers who knew how to set-up such a tent and as 10 year olds we needed all the right stuff too in the tent. Plenty to eat and drink and of course it wasn’t healthy; a supply of good books and flashlights, and there we were ready for adventure that would come our way.

We were always a bit leery of a thunder storm because we always thought we may end up like one of those cartoon characters on TV who were charcoaled and their hair was standing on ends so, if there was any chance of a storm we darted for the house and camped inside…. Not as fun as outside because inside in the den my parents could see what we were up too and say when to turn the lights out. They were real party poopers!!!
Parents never seemed to understand the adventure in our camping and nor do I now when I think back on it.

Outside in the backyard in our tent exposed to the elements and to all the dangerous creatures that were lurking around in the dark just waiting to attack our tent. Those were scary times and then the owl made a noise and that made you almost jump out of your skin with fear, because we had been reading scary stories with our flashlights. Plus Cesar was there to protect us from the perils that were out there that we couldn’t see so never had to fear about the owl attacking our tent.

Once we got settled in under the blankets and Cesar lying at our feet waiting patiently for us to fall asleep and then he would creep under the blankets and push us all out from under them and we would wake up freezing in the morning while he was warm and sound asleep under the blankets. Cesar loved camping with us and as soon as he saw the tent he was the first one in it and you couldn’t get him out of it either. He knew a good thing!!!

It was sometimes a bit damp when it started to rain because the tent would leak if you accidentally touched the side of it and there I would lay with water dripping on me or I woke up damp because I touch the tent while I was asleep.

Those were great times and they are great memories too but then we got older and somehow camping in a little green tent with Cesar had lost its appeal and we wanted to be gown-up and not some babies who slept in the backyard in a tent. Cesar was sad too when we didn’t want to camp with him anymore because I know he loved the times that we all spent together in the little tent and how many times it collapsed because Cesar forgot he was in the tent an stood up taking the tent with him and we would scream at him for ruining our fun and he would just stand there wagging his tail as if to say “I want some fun too.”

Enjoy the last of the summer because it seems to be almost over for the year!

Bedroom Blues

Another bedroom problem has been brought to my attention that can dampen the thoughts of romance in the bedroom and it’s not the “I have a headache” either but a thing that can turn your attention somewhere else.

The good’ol book is said to bring this on the “not tonight dear – I’m reading a good book and don’t want to be interrupted because I am at the best part”. Who ever thought that a book could cause arguments in the bedroom?

I never thought of that aspect before now. Thank you scientist for pointing this out to me!

People always say no one reads anymore or is everyone secretly reading at home in their bedrooms? There by their nightstand is a pile of books just waiting to be read and so their partner is left alone to ponder about life or join the club and start reading too.

Yes, reading can enrich your brain, but it is said that most books read by gals are the romantic sort and have nothing to do with reality and what I found disturbing was that I don’t know what guys read. Though I do have an inkling for what could interest them and I am sure they would say it is cultivated literature expanding their horizons with knowledge that will stay with them for eternity. Sounds good but I somehow doubt it.

It mentioned that because the guy or gal or maybe both are reading they don’t have time for each other – oh the bedroom blues!!!

Maybe they should have a set reading time and then they would have time for each other and could program it in the handy cell phone so they don’t forget that – oh , today’s Tuesday evening and that means no book… bad news if one of you is ill. Then well, I guess it’s back to reading a good book.

But books aren’t the only distractions, there’s the TV set that shouldn’t be in the room or there’s the pile of magazines that will never get read. Plus, the other modern distractions like the computer or cell phone.

What happened to the days when the bedroom was the bedroom for peace and quiet and not an entertainment room like the living room? Those days are over and modern times have invaded our peacefulness… oh, this makes me sad!

You see all those great pictures of how a bedroom should look but it is crammed full of things and so how can anyone relax or even think about taking the time for each other?

I ask those designers do they have bedroom blues because of the so many distractions or is it that no one cares anymore about each other and is too caught up with themselves? Any ideas…..

I could ponder on this topic for ages and maybe not come-up with an answer, but I do think it is good to take time for each other and not too forget that’s why you are together.

The smell of great food

Today brings back memories of my childhood where my mom would always cook-up a real great tasting meal for us and we would devour it in less than 30 minutes.

My mom spent hours in the kitchen preparing the meal. We never ate fish like other folks; we ate roast beef and boy was that good!!

I was always amazed at how my mom always managed to whip-up such a great meal and after slaving in the kitchen for hours still be in a good mood. Though one year her mood turned sour when Cesar our Great Dane dog did something that got him thrown out of the house for a couple of days.

Like always on this day every year my grandparents were there and my mom was busy like always and I had to stay out of the way and keep an eye on Cesar too. I wasn’t too happy about keeping an eye on the dog because I wanted to do other things like play outside. But since I was cleaned up for the day that meant staying inside whiling my time away with the dog.

Cesar and I were having a good time in my bedroom reading books together on my bed. He was a very attentive listener and knew good literature when he heard it, but somehow I must have dosed off reading to him and never noticed that he had slipped off the bed and left my bedroom and snuck downstairs into the kitchen where my mom was basting the roast beef -> bingo!!

My mom had placed the OPEN roasting pan on the oven door and had her back turned to the oven and how Cesar managed was beyond me. But he managed some how to get the roast beef out of the roasting pan without burning himself and came back up stairs into my room with the roast in his mouth.

You can image the scream that came from the kitchen from my mom!!!

And at the same time she screamed I woke up to find Cesar lying at the foot of my bed enjoying a roast. I was still somewhat a sleep but when my mom & dad came into my room I was wide awake and Cesar was pulled off the bed and the roast was taken away from him and I got in big trouble for not keeping an eye on the dog.

Poor Cesar had to stay outside for a couple of days in the cold.

My mom was really upset to say the least and so we were served bread and gravy with vegetables because the roast was already eaten.

I must say when I look back at that day, that it was somehow great fun and the food was good too. There was never a dull day at our house when I was growing up and my mom had nerves of steel to put up with such goings on. But there’s one thing for sure no matter how dire things were she always had a smile on her face and said a kind word about everything.

I wish everyone reading this a Happy Easter and enjoy your time with your family and friends!

The Death of the Encyclopedia

A sad day has now come to our lives as I read yesterday. A company in England that has been printing encyclopedias for hundreds of years will stop printing them. Those wonderful works of art; that we will no longer be able to hold in our hands and enjoy its trove of information is coming to an end. This is heart breaking news and if I had enough money I would buy the company and keep printing those wonderful books.

I remember those wonderful books from my childhood. They supplied me with all the answers to my questions and filled my brain with ideas and the longing to learn more. My parents even up-dated our encyclopedias yearly, so that we had the most up-to-date information. And by doing that we weren’t be behind the times.

Those books helped me with many an essay for high school or my science project and accompanied me through college giving me the wisdom so I could graduate. I remember holding those treasured books in my hand with their leather-bound covers that smelt so nice and the richly illustrated pages explaining to me everything that I wanted to know and more.

Those lovely books stood proudly in the bookshelf at our house there on display in alphabetical order so whoever came by could see that we were readers and had an interest in things. And if I asked my parents a question they couldn’t answer they always said “Look in the encyclopedia and there you will find the answer.” And I did that and was always satisfied with what I found. Plus sometimes I found out even more and this quest for knowledge could be satisfied with those great books.

Now-a-days I only have abridged editions but I own them and I have a couple of others in other languages too, because you don’t find that sort of information anymore.

Things are getting lost in the era of the internet and if you aren’t connected to the internet you seem to be left behind. I ask myself “If you don’t have internet access; how do you get information about certain things?” If there are no encyclopedias anymore in the book form then what do you do? Or is society becoming a mass of people with stagnating brains who have no quest for knowledge?

Hold on to your beloved encyclopedias with it treasure trove of information and you may still even be able to use them to answer your question about something and it still looks good on the book shelf too!

Books & Language

Because I love to read (my App friends will hate me for this) I stumbled across a book about everyday America and its words and idiomatic phrases and because the book is in two languages it makes it more interesting.

But as I am sure many of you may not understand its contents, so I thought I would help you along here by listing these wonderful words and there meanings. Please note this is not a direct translation always and I do not use one of those internet translators either. Though I must admit they are good for a laugh because they never get the wording right.

Instructions for reading: American word first and the translation follows and if you have any questions do not ask because we do not have the answer either.

Apple polisher -> brown noser

Behind the times -> Toooo old and you better catch up on how things are today.

Billion -> Spending way too much money that you don’t have

Call it a day -> I have had enough of work and my colleagues for today and now what to go home and see what I can stir-up there.

A Diamond is forever -> Honey start saving your money if you want to marry me!

Facts of life -> I have no idea and probably never will. Ask someone else if you want the answer.

Think tank -> Over paid people trying to bid for more time.

Walk out -> Leave your partner for a newer model.

Women’s lib -> Does this exist and what is it?

Zero in on something -> It may take a while until I understood what you were saying.

So now after reading this you are an expert at American English and you do not need to use a dictionary – oh, sorry I mean an App to understand someone.

Weight

Weight is something we all think about and mind you if someone says to you ” I never worry about my weight” , that is the biggest lie of the century!

I have tried many a diet without much success, though the pounds stay off for a while but sooner or later they seem to creep back into my body and place themselves around the hip area – sneaky little devils those calories!

It is said with a balanced diet plenty of exercise (how much is plenty I ask myself?)You will achieve your ideal figure. All I can say here is that’s a load of rubbish!

I have tried endless diet plans, spent a fortune on books or diet supplements and at the end of the day my figure really hasn’t made any remarkable changes. My jeans, skirts, dress etc are still tight and I still have to squeeze myself into an item of clothing even after dieting.
– A losing battle-

Additionally, there are other ways to lose weight and these seem to take on a dimension that could set you back financially. You know what I am talking about?

Taking yourself to the garage for a little maintenance or tuning.
There you will find trained mechanics who can work on your figure honing away at it trying to suck out all those fatty cells with their industrial strength vacuum cleaner or chisel away at some other part of your body leaving you in the end with a whole new look. Also they can replace the parts which have lost their warranty and seem to be wearing out with age.
The wonders of science!

Though I have read that you have to go back regularly for inspection jobs, otherwise you won’t be able to keep your slim figure and your parts may lose their guarantee, so you can’t forget the 50 thousand mile inspection or else you are bound for a breakdown somewhere out there. And that would mean trouble!

I can only speak for myself and say I stay away from those sorts of garages, because I feel I was made the way I am and I accept the fact that gravity and calories take their toll over time. But don’t misunderstand me here; I by no means want to put people down who choose the garage route.

Though once I feel I have lost enough weight it makes me want to go out and buy a new dress and show off my new figure (hopefully ????).

So off to the stores it is looking for that new outfit (everyone has experienced this I am sure). You have found an item maybe a dress and think “ok, let me try this on. It may look good on me?”

So off to the fitting room I go accompanied by a sales assistant who has a figure like a model in one of those fashion magazines. Before I have even tried the dress on I feel a bit over weight after looking at the sales assistant.
But, I don’t let that de-motivate me(I want that dress!) So, I try it on and notice – wow I have to really suck in my stomach to make me look good in it.( How long can I walk around like this; maybe 2 minutes at the most?) But before I have a chance to ask for a larger size (help!!!);the sales assistant says to me: ” That fits you perfect and really shows off your figure”. I think to myself- “Is she nuts? And I don’t want to show the world all my bulges and wobbly bits”.

I say, “sorry but I see this a tad differently than you do. And then I say- Can I try this same dress on in a larger size?” This thought brings tears to my eyes!

The smug little sales assistant trots off with a snickering grin on her face as if saying ” You look like a blimp in that dress, but hey I want the commission, so I’ll say anything to get her to buy it”.

Back she is in a flash with a larger size and it’s too big now. What’s my problem here? I ask myself – it’s either too tight or too large. Now the trusty sales assistant says to me: “This dress defiantly fits you better than the other one”.
I think: „is she blind?” I mean really you could fit two of me in the dress now! I am desperate attempting to think to myself- forget it you don’t need the dress and put my own clothes back on and say „Thank you but I have decided against both dresses.” Then as you all know the sales assistant gives you a look that could kill because she hasn’t made a sale on you. Bad luck honey!

So I make a bee line to another store with no sales assistance. Maybe my luck will be better here? I find that perfect dress and this time I take 3 different sizes into the changing room with me because I don’t want to have to go and find another size after. I try one of them on and think to myself “ you don’t look too bad“, so I step-out of the cabin to inspect myself in front of the large mirror and at the same time there’s another women there my age who says to me “ Don’t you think you’re a bit old for that dress?” I could wring her neck, after months of dieting and feeling great about myself and actually finding a dress that fits I hear that. I think to myself “you don’t look too hot either in what you are trying on”.
I bet many of you know exactly what I mean here. Isn’t it sad how there is always someone out there who manages to break your bubble of happiness.

Enjoy dieting and remember don’t let others break your bubble of happiness!

P.S. I bought the dress and have gotten lots of complements too. So remember don’t always believe what others say when it comes to what you are wearing after you have lost some weight.
