The Replacement

Sometimes life changes and things get replaced around the house and no one ever takes into consideration the many years of faithful service the appliances have brought into your life let alone the joys and maybe even the sorrows too.

A good friend of mine informed that she will be buying a new stove for her kitchen. Sure, you’re thinking big deal or great, it’s about time she did. But have you ever thought about what that stove did for her in the past? I bet not! Or even your own stove that you own.

Well this little event got me thinking about my stove, and I will admit that it is a trusty friend in my household and a real lifesaver too. Though I will admit we have had our stressful moments together too, when (I hate to admit it) when I forgot something cooking on the stove top and then there is the smell of something burning or boiling over and I think something nasty and think “great, it’s ruined now”! I am sure you all know this feeling????

But, there are the great smells too, that smell of something wonderful cooking on the stove top and you can’t wait to eat it because it smells so good and the same hold true for the aroma of something yummy baking, roasting, grilling or whatever coming from the oven.

My oven and I have had some challenges through the years to put it nicely. Like the time the oven seemed to shrink because the turkey I bought was to big for the oven. That darn oven seemed to shrink in size over night and I didn’t even notice it. (my gosh I was a bit upset to say the least!!!)

Or there was the time the oven seemed to develop a nasty phase and whenever I popped something into the oven it burnt for whatever reason… Okay, maybe I wasn’t paying attention or was distracted, but I am sure to this day that it was the ovens fault! Or the time (some of you may have experienced this too??) you pop the dinner into the over to cook for your guests who are coming over and for some unexplainable reason the oven isn’t turned on when you check the food one hour later and wonder what has happened here????? A mystery beyond belief……

Then there’s the nasty trick that the oven tries… You pop the food in the oven and somehow the oven gets tooooooo hot and the food burns and bellows out smoke and has a smell of burn food… That is an OMG moment!!! Now what ?????

But through all those trying times with its ups and downs my stove has been a faithful companion in my life and I think we should all be appreciative of the appliance even when it is being replaced, because the old stove also has memories attached to it too and they can be many happy moments in our life and we never really take the time anymore to think about all those great times!

So, before you pop something into the oven or cook something on your stovetop remember those great times associated with your stove. Have a great time cooking !!!

Leftovers again……

There you have it… the big day is over and there is all this food leftover and what to do with it…. OMG… but like every year there are the leftover meals from what is left-over from the 25th and like always the recipe ideas are in abundance online as to what to do with your leftovers.

When I think back on my childhood, my mom didn’t have internet, but somehow knew what to make out of the left-overs from our Christmas dinner, maybe the meals weren’t as exciting as what is around for ideas today, but I must admit what my mom made from the left-overs tasted really good and we never complained either… Thanks “mom” for all the great tasting Christmas meal leftovers!

But the all time favorite back then was left-over turkey on bread with gravy and what ever else was left-over from the meal…. Maybe some of you remember that or still eat it… That was just as good as the meal on Christmas day, if you ask me…. But you didn’t! And the great thing about it was that it was easy to make too…. Not too much work for my mom, who had worked so hard on the previous day in the kitchen preparing everything.

This is a tradition too, but most people don’t see it that way because everyone is too preoccupied with the 25th of December and aren’t thinking about the tradition of eating leftovers… A tradition in itself…. And I think there should be a “ National Left-Over’s day the 26th of December”!

So, for those of you out there going to eat left-over’s today…. All I can say is “ enjoy yourself” on National Left-Over’s day!!

Women’s Pages

Now gals don’t misunderstand me here, but I was just reading the women’s pages on some online newspapers… Okay, I know you are thinking doesn’t she have anything better to do with her time? The thing is I admit reading those pages while other say …. “Me, I never read that stuff”……

I am always amazed at what I can learn from those pages here are some examples:

1. Getting older changes how you look and feel ….. WOW, I never knew that and that your make-up sinks into your wrinkles…. OMG… Scream out loud!!!!

2. Train my brain not to eat food that is bad for me….. WELL, I’ll just have to have a serious word with my brain later on today before I open the fridge door!!

3. A wooden bottle that I can pour my cheap wine into and should make it taste better…. What do I do if guests are coming around and they see that I use this wooden bottle thing…. They are going to think that I am a real tight wad and probably not drink all that so called great tasting cheap wine…… good money down the drain

4. Names of kids have effects on their careers later on in life….. I bet my mom never even thought about it back then and how many other people are walking around out there too without their parents thinking in advance about what their child’s career should be when they grow up??? I will have to take a closer look at my name and see how much it actually affected my career …. I need facts!!!

5. Knowing about wine in four hours… probably by then I will be drunk from all the wine I drank before so in the end everything tastes good PROST!!!

6. Beauty secrets that will keep me looking younger….. I know now that I will be looking good in no time!!!

7. Last but not least… cook something to eat. Recipes to make your mouth water! I love that first I need to watch my weight take care of my brain; I’m getting older and have the wrong name. Drink cheap wine out of a wooden bottle and maybe get drunk by learning all about wine but I know after all that excitement I need some beauty tips to make me look great again before I start to cook all those great recipes at the bottom of the page!!

Isn’t it just great gals knowing that all this important information is out there to better our lives!! Enjoy it

Guys and Gossip

I almost fell off the kitchen chair just now when I read that „Guys Gossip“… That is something that I would have never thought of in a million years!!! My golly; I had to read it in a news paper to confirm my thoughts after all these years…. Thank you newspaper article for letting me know that my thoughts were true…. I really feel relieved now and can get on with my Sunday!!!

Plus, not only the gossip article there was another one in another weekend paper that showed how guys brains are working with thoughts… No scientific stuff, but more categorized about life, and what you guys think about makes me wonder ????

Back to gossip connected to the brain: This whole gossip business made me think and I know I have written about gossip before, but never in this context of each section of a guy’s brain what have they gossiped about or are gossiping about.

So each section of the guy’s brain I guess inspires guys to gossip or is it talk…. I’m confused here

1. “ Beer section”: Now that is something I know has potential for hours of discussion and to gossip about who drinks which brand of beer and where can you get the best deal on a six-pack. Defiantly gossip potential here!

2. “S…. section” : You all know what I am talking about here, without spelling the word out. There too is an endless gossip topic that guys can dream about; compare notes on the subject and fantasize about something for hours, but first a couple of beers to get the conversation rolling…

3. “Making money section”: The most important thing of all or not??? The size of your wallet makes you a man and the thinner it is ….. Sorry, most chicks won’t like you, nor will you have many so called friends either.. But you can gossip about each other’s salaries or how much the boss earns and “why aren’t you earning that much?” Money is a topic which can be gossiped about forever!

4. “ Hot air- doing nothing section”: Oh, now doing nothing and just shooting the breeze about nothing and trying to look good in front of the other guys is a past time for many guys or just talking about nothing trying to impress some gal or someone else.. But you can gossip with the other guys about this and tell them how they BSed some chick into believing something… Life at its finest hour!!

And last but not least on the gossip / brain list was:

5. “Eating section”: Food definitely a must because who has eaten at the best restaurant or who’s partner can cook the best meal or even exchanging your favorite recipes and maybe even start a cooking club to combine all the above mentioned so that the gossip is focused and not just aimless conversation. Good gossip is the key to life and without it we would all be lost!

As for the chicks brain there was a diagram too, but I’ll get back to that later on this week.

Guys enjoy gossiping whatever the topic maybe!

Dozens of Dinner Parties

Dinner parties seem to be seeing a comeback….or it is said.
Did they ever die or is there a need to try to be hip and say” hey we are throwing a dinner party”… before you just had people around for a meal or friends got together for a meal… but a dinner party… OH… those were the days and I can remember them as a kid!!

They were “in” one time and everyone got excited about being invited for a meal and drinks…..cocktails, somewhat fashionable then and mingling amongst friends and strangers and then the big moment when “dinner was announced”!!!

It wasn’t just the dinner that was important it was the whole concept itself… My mom always – planned what to wear, went and got her hair done, saw to it that my dad had the right suit on with the right tie…. Those were dinner parties and no one would ever think of showing up casual like we see today when we go to people’s houses for a meal. Those were events!!!

I too when invited would have to get dressed-up too. It would be unimaginable for children not to be properly attired either, because the family reputation was on show and what women (mother) would want her children to be seen as not properly dressed for the occasion. Ok, I was dressed up in a dress but somehow it really didn’t seem to fit in because if the weather was good all the kids were sent outside and of course told in a stern voice “Don’t get dirty”!!

Those words of wisdom I never have understood, because for us kids going outside back then meant doing something where you would get dirty and you could guarantee once back inside that I/ we all would get in trouble for dirtying our good clothes…. I guess my mom’s logic about not getting dirty when I was a kid will remain a mystery to me forever. Then after getting dirty the other great sentence was: Didn’t I tell you not to get dirty!! … Even when I tried to convince my mother that you can’t play outside and not get dirty, was useless because she didn’t want to hear that. Nor did any of the other mother’s either…..

Then we kids were shunted into another room and served what everyone always thought us kids loved to eat… Hotdogs and french-fries and drink a sickly sweet drink that gave you an orange or red mustache!! (I’m sure many of you know this drink) Why we had to eat that all the time is beyond me. I guess back then everyone thought that this was dinner party food for kids. I always wanted what the adults we eating… REAL FOOD!!!

Those were great times!!

But it is true no one really does those things anymore. It was so fun back then and my mom even enjoying throwing those dinner parties too and cooking all the food herself and getting everything ready for that big evening… It was simply great!!

Will the “Dinner Party” make a comeback or is it lost to the TV and computer world???

Holiday… Make-up

Now, I really don’t know what to do since now there is the holiday make-up that you should have as a gal.. I thought my make-up was fine until I read the article about holiday make-up that told me I need that special touch to make me glow on that day.

I think just by standing in the kitchen cooking the meal I will be a glow from the heat put off from the stove, so why the fuss, just cook the holiday meal and there you go.. Rosy cheeks for free. Ok, I’ll admit it is not the same as going out and buying blusher, but it is a natural color that you get in your face from cooking the meal and maybe even more color too if there is someone there who doesn’t like your cooking….. Christmas is the season to be jolly

I wonder what the holiday make-up colors are?? Traditional red & green or a more modern tone that will liven up my face…. I need help!!! It seems to me as the years pass there is always more to think and worry about with Christmas approaching at the speed of light…..

My mom never gave a second thought about which make-up she would be wearing on Christmas day. She just dolled herself up and if I remember rightly she looked good for a mom. Mom’s had that mom look back then, not like moms now-a-days.

Since I started writing here; I think I’ll go tomorrow and have a Christmas make-up consultation and see what they suggest. Though I am a bit worried, because when you see how some of those models in the magazines look with their make-up on and if I looked like that I may scare everyone away and truly that is something that I don’t want to do. Plus, I have never seen anyone walking down the street with that sort of make-up on. I must be living in the wrong town…..

Personally, I like the color of the make-up which I have but still the thought not having the right Christmas make-up is a trifle worrying. Do other women worry about this problem too???
I think when I am at the office tomorrow I will make a questionnaire and send it around to all the women and see what they have to say about this subject and then I can draw my conclusion from that. Ok, maybe I should only ask the women who wear make-up, because there are a few who don’t wear any and that could sidetrack me from my Christmas make-up problem. Life can be so complicated!

Questionnaire:
1. What is Christmas make-up? No idea, never heard of it
2. What colors for Christmas? Red & Green… ok, green eye shadow & red blusher, lipstick maybe
3. How much do you want to spend? Nothing… I’m too cheap!

Well, I guess my Christmas make-up problem could be easier solved then I thought.

Gals, enjoy your Christmas make-up.. no matter which color you choose!

What’s Cooking?

What’s cooking for the meal for that big day can be a tremendous feat if you are not organized to the last second or at least I think so???? Everyone seems to be running around trying to get those last minute things for their Christmas meal or the last minute present because they forgot someone on their list. Well, those things can happen….. I am saved from this dilemma this year because I am for ONCE in my life organized and believe me I find it hard to believe myself but it is true!!!

My guy asked me this morning if I was feeling ok, because I am soooooo organized this year. I told him that I thought for once in my life I want to be organized and have time for everybody on the 25th instead of spending all my time running around doing something. I want a relaxed Christmas and so I will have it!!!! No questions asked here- that is my decision!!!

My tree is decorated and the food is purchased and all my presents are bought; so Christmas you can come to our house. Who says life has to be stressful at this time of year??? Ok, I know thousands of people around the world would argue this point with me, but with a little foresight and planning there is no stress and hey if something goes wrong on the 25th then it goes wrong. I am too old to worry about what everyone thinks of how I do things around my place and if something burns on the stove top then it can be either forgotten or I’ll make something else to replace it… life can be so simple!

My mom was amazing when it came to organizing our Christmas dinner on the 25th and she always remained cool and served up a super meal in my eyes! Mom – thanks for all those great turkey dinners you made us. I know I can cook pretty good but my mom’s Christmas dinner can still top mine. Plus, I’ve never been as organized as she was and thought this year I’ll try her strategy and see if it works….. Please let it work and I’ll be the happiest person on earth

Another thing, I read all those articles about how stressed folks are or will be on the 25th. I always wonder are people stressed so then they have something to talk about or what is it??? Even when I am not organized I don’t feel stressed-out. I think society puts too much emphasis on stress and so everyone is convinced that on the 25th you have to be stressed instead of taking things as they come and enjoying life for a change.

So, relax and take things as they come because then there won’t be any stress and enjoy the day when it’s there!

Moms are the Best!

Mother’s day is coming up, and why is that only one day a year? Moms should be celebrated everyday for what they do or did and not only for one day.

My mom did great things for me and put up with all my nonsense when I was a kid. My mom was always there for me when I needed a shoulder to cry on or she was my friend too and I could do lots of things with her. I didn’t see my mom as just a mom that should be thanked only on one day a year.

I was thankful everyday of the year. She taught me so many wonderful things and taught me to be strong and not let things get you down so quickly. I love my mom and I will admit it, even though she can’t hear/ read what I say. But I bet if she could read a blog from heaven she would smile at what I wrote.

Moms are great! My mom always had baked cookies and on cold days when I came home from school there on the table waiting for me were wonderful cookies fresh out of the oven.

My mom made sure that I always did my homework; even when I didn’t want too and now I am thankful for that. My mom taught me how to cook – ok, not every meal turned out but I never starved.

My mom taught me to be patient and not always be in a hurry or how to appreciate the small things in life because they are important too.

My mom was a bundle of wisdom in my eyes and always will be with her smile on her face or her laughing about something. The woman had a sense of humor too and she passed all those great things onto me.

Mom I love you!

So everyone out there don’t forget your mother wherever she is and all the great things that she did for you!

Smell of Love

Who said you can’t smell love? That’s nonsense because someone has come up with a special spray so you can.
This I believe is baloney!!

You don’t need a spray to smell love; you just know it. Remember your first love – oh those were the days! You seemed to be floating on a cloud of happiness and the world smelt wonderful and was. You seemed to have a feeling of joy that couldn’t be put into words; oh I was happy!!

My heart is fluttering thinking back on those times.

Then we get a bit older but we still don’t need a spray for love because you know that you love the other person and your senses are twirling around inside you. The joy and the smell of love.

Maybe after sometime people forget about the smell of love and should be reminded about it but a spray cannot replace your feelings only the real smell of love works if you love each other.

What is the smell of love and how can you define it?

This is something only you can answer because how I smell love may not be the same as how you smell love.

The smell of love cannot be bought because it isn’t tangible nor can you smell love via the internet either. You are only infatuated with the virtual contact and there is no smell of love.

So where’s the smell of love? Does springtime bring about the smell of love with the days getting warmer and that warmth fills our hearts giving us the smell of love. Or maybe in the summer you can smell love when you are together with the person you love. I think the smell of love doesn’t have any seasons; it’s always there with us where ever we go.

But sometimes the small of love can go sour and spoil our smell of love, but once you have gotten over that sour smell then you can rediscover the smell of love that you thought was forgotten.

Enjoy the smell of love because it is always there in your heart and you cannot buy the precious smell of love.

Plastic Plates and Palatable

This is a somewhat of a touchy subject because it is something that is everywhere in a lot of people’s lives.

I think it’s great when people try to do something for the environment or try to save money in their households but what I do not understand is when everyone wants to save money in various areas is why do people use disposable plastics plates to eat off of at home? Is this really something that people have to do?

Has anyone even thought about how much money they invest in such disposable plastic plates and are they really saving money?

I see it like this: an average household with 4 people living in it and they may consume 2 meals a day that require a plate; so that’s 56 plates a week at $15.68 x 52 weeks a year = $815.36.

I do not want to think about how many household there are like this and how much petroleum is used to produce those plates that are used once and then thrown in the garbage. I ask have you really saved anything? And I am sure there are many other items in people’s daily lives that they use only once and disposed of, and is all that plastic really necessary?

Wouldn’t it be better to buy a set of dishes made out of ceramic or similar material? And all you have to do is wash them after you have used them. And at the same time you are doing your bit for the environment.

I personally find it better to eat off of a proper plate instead of a disposable plastic plate and plus a proper plate offers stability and does not use so much of the earth’s natural resources like a disposable plastic plate does. With normal dishes the food tastes better too and is more appealing than those plastic things. There are hundreds of reasons for using a proper plate.

Then there is the possibility that when food or beverages comes in contact with plastic that it isn’t good for your health, but it is still used anyways and no one seems to even think about it. The main thing is convenience and you can throw it away easily. Have people gotten so lazy or have they just plain forgotten what it is like to eat off a real plate? Can anyone answer this question for me?

I am a staunch supporter of recycling and have seen how it is done in some European countries and find it amazing and how good it really works and that the population is really aware of the environment and wants to do their bit for it. Plus, no one would even dream of eating off a disposable plastic plate neither at home nor when their on/at a picnic either. That’s really classy and has some sort of style to it which I find really great!!

More people should try this and would be amazed at how nice it can be to sit at the table together and everyone has their own (real) plate and also no one needs to eat in front of the television either. I think that eating in front of the TV is the worst thing of all and you would be amazed that if people tried to sit together at the table that they may find something to talk about if they practice it a bit and know what is going on in the other person’s life and not always preoccupied with themselves but take an interest in the others around them in their household.

And this also gives you a chance to eat a great meal together, and you can cook-up something together from natural products and not fast-food or pre-made, i.e. TV dinners or the likes; which are a total waste of money.

Real homemade food tastes great on real plates and you can enjoy the results of what you cooked and try so many great recipes that don’t cost the world either.

So try it -> a real home cooked meal served on real plates that make for a great time and maybe a good conversation too.
