Leftovers again……

There you have it… the big day is over and there is all this food leftover and what to do with it…. OMG… but like every year there are the leftover meals from what is left-over from the 25th and like always the recipe ideas are in abundance online as to what to do with your leftovers.

When I think back on my childhood, my mom didn’t have internet, but somehow knew what to make out of the left-overs from our Christmas dinner, maybe the meals weren’t as exciting as what is around for ideas today, but I must admit what my mom made from the left-overs tasted really good and we never complained either… Thanks “mom” for all the great tasting Christmas meal leftovers!

But the all time favorite back then was left-over turkey on bread with gravy and what ever else was left-over from the meal…. Maybe some of you remember that or still eat it… That was just as good as the meal on Christmas day, if you ask me…. But you didn’t! And the great thing about it was that it was easy to make too…. Not too much work for my mom, who had worked so hard on the previous day in the kitchen preparing everything.

This is a tradition too, but most people don’t see it that way because everyone is too preoccupied with the 25th of December and aren’t thinking about the tradition of eating leftovers… A tradition in itself…. And I think there should be a “ National Left-Over’s day the 26th of December”!

So, for those of you out there going to eat left-over’s today…. All I can say is “ enjoy yourself” on National Left-Over’s day!!

Save Me A Cent

All I read lately is about how bad times are and that we are all trying to save and get ahead somehow. Yes, that is sad that the “good times” are over but shouldn’t we make the best of what we have???? That was how it was when I was a kid. But, modern time’s people living beyond their means or can or could cause problems or the influence of things that are out of your control….

I’m no financial wizard nor do I want to be but the advice from around the globe as to how to save a penny here and there seems somewhat overrated in my eyes and so I have interpreted the ways to save cash in my words:

Penny pinching: It may be cool in certain circles but for those less fortunate who have to pinch every penny it may not be so fun …. So that sort of advice you can take it as you see best for yourself.

Secondhand-stores: They have always been around; only before no one ever gave them a second thought until nowadays were the trend to be trendy is to shop there… I need to be in!!

Gardening & good living: We have always done gardening but nowadays it’s not for pleasure it’s a must for many. But you can say what you want home grown veggies taste really good and it does give your life that little extra and to see the results of your garden and to say…. I did that myself !!

Hotel Balconia: Many of you out there may not have heard of this great place and it should be on the top of your vacation list! Hotel Balconia has a very familiar flair you don’t need to drive hours to get there and it offers all the luxuries of home… Have you guessed where it is??? Right – staying at home

Cleaner air: Maybe a fact where you are living but isn’t that only because you can’t afford to drive your car and the factory around the corner that employed so many people shut down and moved somewhere else (you all know why). A positive fact is that if you own a bicycle you can get it out and ride around and enjoy the clean air and get exercise at the same time, and save going to the gym for a workout( now that’s a money savings tip!)

Books: First spend your hard earned money on an e-reader and then you can read to your heart’s content as long as you have paid your electricity bill to recharge the battery in your e-reader and have enough money left over to buy the e-books. Logical conclusion in my eyes as long as you don’t need to buy glasses…..

Divorce: No one in their right mind will get a divorce nowadays it’s too expensive. So they stick it out with their partner, and as the “old saying” goes, and now it holds true ….. For better or worse- Honey we are staying together no matter what!!!

Families: These days when people are penny pinching , gardening , not divorcing and Hotel Balconiaing it, then naturally they are together and will eat their meals together.. What else is there to do except be together and be a family… Wasn’t it like that too in earlier times before the computer????

This whole business with saving, reading, gardening and so forth has worn me out already.. So those of you out there reading this… Take a deep breath and clear your mind and approach your life as you see best!!

P.S. Just a little thank you to all of you people out there who are reading & following my blog.

Perfect times – are they lost?

Perfect times seem to be a thing of the past. I got thinking-I can still do that; an amazing fact!!! About how it was when I was I kid. Life seemed sooooo perfect and the books we read or the TV shows we watched were full of happy people and there was never violence. Those were happy times!!!

What sparked this off was an old TV show that I saw on TV the other day; depicting the happy family. You may remember – Mom stayed home and cooked and was always perfectly groomed and smiling no matter what happened – Are mom’s like that today???
The kids were clean and happy and never complained. Dad was happy too and came home in the evening with a smile on his face as if he just had the best day in his life…. Maybe he did and we just don’t know what he was up too??? I don’t want to ruin the perfectness here… so the dad had a great day at work and is plain old happy!!!

Then there was the great book with Dick & Jane and their dog Spot – that book taught me to read and everyone depicted in the book was happy even the mom & dad. Happiness never seemed to stop. It was everywhere you turned and I was happy too, and didn’t know any better. Life was full of happiness.

I can’t remember as a kid my parents even arguing…. They were happy too, ok- they got upset with me once in a while or our dog but those were only trivial setbacks as I see it now. But back then that meant the end of the world, if I got in trouble!!!

Somehow through the years people stopped being so happy on TV and the people around me don’t seem as happy as they were years ago either. What has happened to being happy?????? Or has the world changed soooo much that people have forgotten what it is like to be happy.

Sometimes I wish for those carefree and happy days of the past again, because people seemed more relaxed and not always in a hurry or worrying about the latest up-date on their social network or some other device that distracts us, so that we have no time to relax and enjoy life.

It would be great to see more content & happy people around – and not in the superficial sense either. Will those sort of days ever come back or are they lost forever??????????

Thanks for Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving has come and gone in one country and in another everyone is waiting patiently for it to come. Without those brave folks risking their life and limb to cross the Atlantic to start a new life there may not have ever come about the “Thanksgiving Day”. So thank you pilgrims!

Today we only need to go to the grocery store and pick out a turkey and all the other stuff that you want to eat with it and in no time at all you can serve up a great meal for your family and friends. Boy, how easy life can be!!!

Those poor pilgrims had to invest a lot of time into their Thanksgiving meal and that required good planning and hopefully someone would spot a turkey to shot … I’m tired already thinking about the work involved. Then once a turkey was bagged and back home they went and the guys gal had to do the rest of the work, like clean the bird and cook it in a wood stove (maybe- can’t say because I wasn’t around back then.)or an open fire until it was done…. Thank goodness for electric ovens!

These thoughts bring back fond memories of my mom cooking us a wonderful meal on that day and the smell of the turkey cooking lingering in the air… I’m getting hungry!!! My mom invested a lot of time too.. Ok, not as much as the pilgrim gals, but still it did take her sometime. And I can say it was worth every minute that I waited. Some years it seemed like December because there was snow on the ground outside on Thanksgiving Day. I wonder did the pilgrims have snow on Thanksgiving Day way back then??

Though Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks and be with your family and friends but somehow I feel it has lost its touch and become very commercialized. We should be thankful that we can be together with our family and friends and that everyone is healthy and can enjoy a lovely meal together no matter what you serve on that day.
You don’t need to spend a fortune just to try to impress people on that day. It’s a day of giving thanks and should be remember as that.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving Day this week and remember to give thanks for the great food that you are served and to appreciate the work involved in it.

Life and my Laptop Computer

Laptops are great things and we can take them with us wherever we go and stay in contact with the world and tell everyone what we are up to. Ok, that is if you have access to the world and if not well you are left high and dry and have no idea about what is going on or no one can contact you.

I am so happy that I am always reachable 24/7 and that way I won’t miss out on any new news from friends and family!!    I’m an online junky

When I was a kid we never dreamed that it would be possible to communicate with someone on the other side of the world and get an answer from them in a minute. Back then …… oh soooooo long ago; I got out some paper and my trusty pen (what’s a pen? Wasn’t that the thing made out of metal and had some ink in it….) and actually wrote something and then stuck it in an envelope went to the post office bought a stamp and sent it off… waited awhile and maybe got an answer.  I miss the paper.

It was always so nice to open up my mail box and there inside was a letter or card from someone who had thought of me and I could sit down and hold the letter in my hand and read it and save it. It was so personal and not like the electronic post that is impersonal ..ok, there are many positive aspects to electronic post but one thing it cannot replace is a hand written letter .

My laptop lets me read the newspapers around the world in any language I want as long as I can understand it.  And years ago I was happy with the local newspaper that was delivered to my doorstep every morning rain or shine. Oh how my laptop has changed my life.

My laptop lets me communicate with people all over the world and I have never met them in person and probable never will either. But somehow everyone wants to communicate with each other and so you can have millions of friends…. Hopefully nice friends! Or you can show the world all your photos too. Not like back in the olden days where you could only show a limited number of people your photos.  Oh how times have changed!!!!!

My laptop is like a faithful companion and without it I am nothing and have nothing to say to others when they say “Did you see/ read….. on the internet?”  There I would be cut off from the world and have to say…. “ No, because I don’t have a laptop or internet.” I am sunk!!!

So, I have come to the conclusion (no scientist involved) that without my trusty laptop my world is limited, but I can still enjoy myself without it too.

Try a laptop free day.. It can be fun!

Living in a Happy City?

Well, they have measured the happiness of some people in cities in a certain section of the world and have been able to come to the conclusion that in certain cities people are happier then those living in other cities. WELL, WELL, WELL …. What should we do then??

I noted that my city wasn’t listed or maybe that was because I live in a town and town folks aren’t as happy as city folks or is it the other way around?  Plus, I wonder if everyone happy in those so called happy cities are really happy? I need to ask around and see what those folks say there.

But this whole topic did get me thinking and so I checked the newspaper to see what house costs in the happy cities and of course as luck would have it they are a tad more expensive then where I am living. I want to live in a happy city…… I am happy!!

I can see it now this evening when my guy comes home from work and I have to break the bad news to him that we are not living in a happy area. I am sure he will explode on the spot and say “Honey, we have to move by the end of the week.”  Because I know my guy likes to be happy on the weekend… no grumps at our place!

And to top things off; one of my friends lives in one of those happy cities and didn’t know it until I called her and told her the good news. Though I will admit that she didn’t sound too happy about the news and said that she didn’t feel as happy as the survey said she should feel.

This happiness stuff is a bit much and how do you really measure people’s happiness in a city? Good question, eh???

This happiness issue got me to thinking and I came up with a little list:

  1. I own lots of stuff: car, boat, house, TV, etc – I am happy because I have lots of materialistic stuff….
  2. I like my life at least at the moment  and I get along with my guy( a definite plus point for happiness
  3. I am in good health – they say this plays an important role in mental well being. Or has that changed too??
  4. I love my family – as long as everyone is happy and not in a bad mood and don’t want to argue about something!

But I think there’s an easier answer and we don’t need to read it in a survey about which city has the happiest people based on possessions or the likes.

The answer is easy …. Be happy wherever you are.

The smell of great food

Today brings back memories of my childhood where my mom would always cook-up a real great tasting meal for us and we would devour it in less than 30 minutes.

My mom spent hours in the kitchen preparing the meal. We never ate fish like other folks; we ate roast beef and boy was that good!!

I was always amazed at how my mom always managed to whip-up such a great meal and after slaving in the kitchen for hours still be in a good mood. Though one year her mood turned sour when Cesar our Great Dane dog did something that got him thrown out of the house for a couple of days.

Like always on this day every year my grandparents were there and my mom was busy like always and I had to stay out of the way and keep an eye on Cesar too. I wasn’t too happy about keeping an eye on the dog because I wanted to do other things like play outside. But since I was cleaned up for the day that meant staying inside whiling my time away with the dog.

Cesar and I were having a good time in my bedroom reading books together on my bed. He was a very attentive listener and knew good literature when he heard it, but somehow I must have dosed off reading to him and never noticed that he had slipped off the bed and left my bedroom and snuck downstairs into the kitchen where my mom was basting the roast beef -> bingo!!

My mom had placed the OPEN roasting pan on the oven door and had her back turned to the oven and how Cesar managed was beyond me. But he managed some how to get the roast beef out of the roasting pan without burning himself and came back up stairs into my room with the roast in his mouth.

You can image the scream that came from the kitchen from my mom!!!

And at the same time she screamed I woke up to find Cesar lying at the foot of my bed enjoying a roast. I was still somewhat a sleep but when my mom & dad came into my room I was wide awake and Cesar was pulled off the bed and the roast was taken away from him and I got in big trouble for not keeping an eye on the dog.

Poor Cesar had to stay outside for a couple of days in the cold.

My mom was really upset to say the least and so we were served bread and gravy with vegetables because the roast was already eaten.

I must say when I look back at that day, that it was somehow great fun and the food was good too. There was never a dull day at our house when I was growing up and my mom had nerves of steel to put up with such goings on. But there’s one thing for sure no matter how dire things were she always had a smile on her face and said a kind word about everything.

I wish everyone reading this a Happy Easter and enjoy your time with your family and friends!
