Leftovers again……

There you have it… the big day is over and there is all this food leftover and what to do with it…. OMG… but like every year there are the leftover meals from what is left-over from the 25th and like always the recipe ideas are in abundance online as to what to do with your leftovers.

When I think back on my childhood, my mom didn’t have internet, but somehow knew what to make out of the left-overs from our Christmas dinner, maybe the meals weren’t as exciting as what is around for ideas today, but I must admit what my mom made from the left-overs tasted really good and we never complained either… Thanks “mom” for all the great tasting Christmas meal leftovers!

But the all time favorite back then was left-over turkey on bread with gravy and what ever else was left-over from the meal…. Maybe some of you remember that or still eat it… That was just as good as the meal on Christmas day, if you ask me…. But you didn’t! And the great thing about it was that it was easy to make too…. Not too much work for my mom, who had worked so hard on the previous day in the kitchen preparing everything.

This is a tradition too, but most people don’t see it that way because everyone is too preoccupied with the 25th of December and aren’t thinking about the tradition of eating leftovers… A tradition in itself…. And I think there should be a “ National Left-Over’s day the 26th of December”!

So, for those of you out there going to eat left-over’s today…. All I can say is “ enjoy yourself” on National Left-Over’s day!!

Crossword Puzzle…

Did you know that the good ‘ol crossword puzzle is a 100 years old or at least that’s what I read. Has it been around that long???

I can remember my gran always doing those in the newspaper or those books that you could buy filled with those puzzles and she would sit there for hours or at least it seemed like it and she would do those puzzles. Whether she had the right word or not I’ll never know. Then my mom started doing them when she was bored… a great time killer back then before the internet , and it seems that people are still doing them, maybe it’s something that will last forever and not get lost in the hordes of game apps.

Crossword puzzles are fun and it always makes me think and try to find out which word belongs in the space and then connect it with the other words… Guessing at its finest!! Sometimes I haven’t the faintest idea what word they are looking for, but I keep on trying… my brain needs to know more words!!!!

It is unbelievable how many words you can store in your brain and remember how to spell them correctly too.. Somewhat of a challenge but again I’d don’t use a spelling app… good’ol memory at work!!! Just amazing if you ask me.

Those folks who make-up those crossword puzzles must take a lot of time to make them and how many people are making them??? That I would like to know… Any answers out there?? Plus, crosswords are in so many different languages too.. WOW!!! And how long do they spend on making each crossword puzzle, because some are easy and others are very difficult. Or is everything computerized today and the newspaper folks just press a few keys and a crossword puzzle is created with the crossword puzzle software??? So many unanswered questions… I need to call my local newspaper for an answer.

That’s enough about crossword puzzles, because I need to do the one in today’s paper now.

Enjoy your crossword puzzle today!

Coffee Time

My days of learning new things never seem to amaze me and now there is an official time when it is best to have a good’ol cup of coffee. Ok, this is right in the middle of the morning at 10:30 or there about; I can’t remember the exact time that was written. But anyways, it’s supposed to be good for you.

I wonder here to myself how can I still be alive after drinking coffee at all sorts of hours of the day….. A question that I just can’t seem to answer.. My heart is starting to beat a bit faster .. OH, maybe I have had toooo much coffee this morning!!

I ask now.. Can I have a cup of coffee when I get up in the morning or do I have to wait until the official “have a cup of coffee time”??? These modern times when you have to do everything at a certain time are getting to be too much for me and I bet for some of you out there too!

When I think back to when I was a kid; my mom seemed to have the percolator on 24 hours a day… Remember the percolator???

Either the stove top model or the electric version. I remember the Stove top sort where you have to keep an eye on the percolator, because once it started to perk you had to be careful that it didn’t boil over or else the coffee was ruined and there were coffee grounds in the coffee and all over the stove top too. Boy, did my mom get upset when the coffee boiled over because she didn’t get to the stove fast enough to remove the coffee pot from the element.. She always seemed as if the world would end when the coffee boiled over!

But then times changed and my dad bought her an electric percolator (white porcelain with blue flowers) A must have for every household back then!! I remember that percolator distinctly… That was the percolators of percolators, and I am sure some of your parents had that model too.

According to my mom that was the best coffee ever. I can’t say because my mom’s motto was “Kids don’t drink coffee because it will stunt your growth”( I never understood that sentence, but back then you never argued about what your parents said.); so I never got to taste that great percolator coffee, but I can remember it did smell good: Actually better then the smell of brewing coffee in a coffee machine. Oh the fond memories of coffee

Now there is thousands of ways to make coffee and now there are times to drink coffee; gosh let’s bring back the good’ol percolator and be able to drink a good cup of coffee when we want!

Enjoy your cup of coffee!

The smell of great food

Today brings back memories of my childhood where my mom would always cook-up a real great tasting meal for us and we would devour it in less than 30 minutes.

My mom spent hours in the kitchen preparing the meal. We never ate fish like other folks; we ate roast beef and boy was that good!!

I was always amazed at how my mom always managed to whip-up such a great meal and after slaving in the kitchen for hours still be in a good mood. Though one year her mood turned sour when Cesar our Great Dane dog did something that got him thrown out of the house for a couple of days.

Like always on this day every year my grandparents were there and my mom was busy like always and I had to stay out of the way and keep an eye on Cesar too. I wasn’t too happy about keeping an eye on the dog because I wanted to do other things like play outside. But since I was cleaned up for the day that meant staying inside whiling my time away with the dog.

Cesar and I were having a good time in my bedroom reading books together on my bed. He was a very attentive listener and knew good literature when he heard it, but somehow I must have dosed off reading to him and never noticed that he had slipped off the bed and left my bedroom and snuck downstairs into the kitchen where my mom was basting the roast beef -> bingo!!

My mom had placed the OPEN roasting pan on the oven door and had her back turned to the oven and how Cesar managed was beyond me. But he managed some how to get the roast beef out of the roasting pan without burning himself and came back up stairs into my room with the roast in his mouth.

You can image the scream that came from the kitchen from my mom!!!

And at the same time she screamed I woke up to find Cesar lying at the foot of my bed enjoying a roast. I was still somewhat a sleep but when my mom & dad came into my room I was wide awake and Cesar was pulled off the bed and the roast was taken away from him and I got in big trouble for not keeping an eye on the dog.

Poor Cesar had to stay outside for a couple of days in the cold.

My mom was really upset to say the least and so we were served bread and gravy with vegetables because the roast was already eaten.

I must say when I look back at that day, that it was somehow great fun and the food was good too. There was never a dull day at our house when I was growing up and my mom had nerves of steel to put up with such goings on. But there’s one thing for sure no matter how dire things were she always had a smile on her face and said a kind word about everything.

I wish everyone reading this a Happy Easter and enjoy your time with your family and friends!

Time

This seems to be a precious thing and sometimes there doesn’t seem to be enough of it. When I was younger I felt that time stood still and that I would never get older, so that I could enjoy doing things that adults do, but now that I am there I wish that I could slow down time a bit and not have everyday fly by in a wink.

I always laughed when my mom said “When you get older time just flies by.” I thought this must be a joke and she just wants me to stop saying that I am bored or when will dinner be served, etc. You all know what I mean; how time stood still back then.

Now-a-days everyone seems to be running here and there trying to get everything done and meet their friend and do this and do that besides hold down a job. I ask myself sometimes and maybe you do too: I wish the day had more hours in it? And if it did would it make life easier? This is a question that I cannot answer. But maybe you can????

We have many new devices and appliances in our lives that are supposed to make life easier, and I can honestly say that not all these things make my life easier, nor do they save time either. Instead they seem to slow things down or not function the way it should. And the cell phones or PDA’s that we all have, that everyone is clinging to as if it is a life boat going to save us from the unknown. We load these devices with dates, telephone numbers, photos and whatever else so as too not miss anything and supposedly saves time. Look at the time I waste monkeying around with these things and if I lose it hopefully, I have noted the telephone numbers and dates someplace else. Otherwise, I am sunk!
Then I really need time to find all those numbers, dates, etc.

But that’s not really the point here. Last year just flew by and now it’s the middle of February. I think what did I do the whole time?
Weekends seem to go by in a flash and always I have to worry about time. Be on time for an appointment, on time for work, etc. The list is endless.

I need a vacation but then that flies by too giving me the feeling that it was only a dream and all I have left to show is some pictures that I will show everyone that I took on my handheld device and that was it. Over and done with!

Remember when people did have time and you had come back from vacation having taken pictures (the old-fashioned way – not digital) and then you made slides out of them and after they were developed you invited friends over and took the time and had a little party and slide show, showing off your great vacation pictures and everyone was having a great time because they had time to enjoy themselves. Where are those days? If am lucky I can get a group of friends together every 2 months, because like always no one has time in their busy schedule.

I think we need to slow down a bit and look at things; whether it is work or in your private life. Maybe by taking a bit of time to look at problems more closely things could get solved instead of making a lighting flash decision and in the end everything goes wrong. Or as I read recently most couples only communicate with each other for about 5 minutes a day. (Why are they even together; I ask myself?) Why don’t they take the time to talk to each to each other? Time to communicate is important in life otherwise everyone goes their own way and no one knows what the other is up too.
Again the good ‘ol -> time

Make time and enjoy a bit of life otherwise it will fly by and you will ask yourself “Where has the time gone?”
Make time and enjoy life!
