A little memory ..

Winter is still here and many of us as adults cannot wait for it to be over, so you won’t have to shovel the snow, worry about getting to work on time or simply being snowed in… The view of snow changes with age as many people have told me. I like snow, but still only a certain amount of it, so that makes me as bad as the next person….

But as a kid I never thought about snow that way.. it was simply great no worries, no shoveling, or at least limited shoveling… toboggining, and so forth. A day outside in the snow was simply great to a certain extent!!

Or to top that, a snow day… No school and I could stay home for the day because there was too much snow… A real drag from my mom , because that put a damper on here daily routine to say the least, and no time for coffee with friends, talking on the phone, NO… I was there and demanded attention or to be entertained would be a better choice of words. No daytime TV, no computers… Just simple everyday amusement… Go outside and find something to do, was my mom’s motto and take care… Of what I never knew?? and nor did I ask either….
I just got dressed and went outside…

Though getting dressed to go outside in the snow did require some planning and time too…. Firstly, was my snowsuit dry from yesterdays excursion outside and were my boots dry??? Major concerns for me when I really needed an excuse why not to go outside… And my mom seemed always to be prepared with dry clothes and boots, so as to set me on my way in the perils of winter…. I must say I was not the only kid around in this position… All moms sent their kids outside no matter what the weather conditions were and we were outside for hours running around getting up to something but nothing bad…

Then after we were turning blue from the cold we all seemed to be magically called inside so as not to freeze our back-sides off and have something warm to eat and drink before the next artic expedition in the afternoon… Where we could spend another couple of hours killing time, because we were too tired from the morning round of activities and all the moms were the same…. Kids outside now !!! Then we walked around, hung out in someone’s garage so as not to get too cold or hoped to find a friends mother who felt sorry for us out in the sub zero temperatures ( not really true but it felt like that.)
No sympathy and so we dragged ourselves around until we could go inside for the day and then the great question “ Did you all have fun outside together?”… Really now, standing or walking around in the cold was not our idea of having a great time together and nor did mothers understand this…

But after peeling off all the layers of clothing and looking as though I had been to the artic and back I simply appreciated being inside… And the thought of the next day’s adventures in the snow seemed like a great idea too, because it was something we looked forward too.

Enjoy the snowy weather no matter what age you are!

Marry me … or be free

There is always something surprising around every corner nowadays… The guy asking a gal.. “ Will you marry me?” is definitely a BIG step in their lives let alone it could be a costly one toooo.. That comes just when the thought pops into your mind.

I never realized nor thought that a guy has to go to a training course and arrange a package deal to learn how to “pop” the question. Though times have changed and things are not like they used to be; where a guy met a gal and thought “hey, she’s the right one for me!” and popped the question.

Today those thoughts are out dated…… Now it’s first to the seminar to learn how to get engaged… What do you need to learn.. Just ask the gal if she’ll marry you and if she loves you; I am sure she’ll say YES!!! Does that need schooling to ask such a question and get a package deal for your engagement??? But maybe there is more to this whole deal than what meets the eye????

Yes; the ring…. How big does the diamond have tooooo beeee before she will even consider getting married? There you go problem number 1 before the gal is even asked and where do you “pop” the question???? At home by no means…. An expensive night out and the gal has her calculator with her to figure out is this whole thing worth getting involved in and the poor guy is sweating hoping that he can hook her with his charm and not his wallet. I guess that is what the package deals are for?? Everything is planned down to the smallest detail and your coach maybe sitting at another table signaling to the guy what to do… Boring and not authentic if you ask me.

When I think back…..oh.. That’s a while ago, but still my guy was gutsy and without any special seminars or coaching just popped the question and the rest is history…. I just don’t understand why people have gotten so insecure about such things in life and if I knew the guy I was going to marry went to a seminar and arranged for a package deal engagement so he could propose to me…. Well; I would tell him to stick it right where the sun doesn’t shine. Because why do you need someone for everything you do in life???

Ok, the package deal engagement planer can earn some cash or does the guy get his money back if the gal says “NO”?? He should because if the plan does not work out then that is good money wasted for what…. A date that has gone bad and your planer’s plan didn’t work out.

Guys…. Be brave if you have met the gal of your dreams and just ask her to marry you and not some package deal nonsense that could ruin the moment forever….. Good luck popping the question!

Twinkies are Leaving us Too?

Another sad day has come upon us this year 2012 and like all the other sad things that will be leaving our lives this year is the Twinkie that has maybe decided to join the ranks too. I could cry now… my childhood memories of those sweet Twinkies is fading away too.

Twinkies were a main staple in my lunch box in elementary school and they held the power that you could control your friends with because my mom put a Twinkie in my lunch box and my friends moms didn’t. My friends would sometime drool just looking at me eat my Twinkie and of course I had to exaggerate a bit as too how much I was enjoying it. Or there were kids who wanted to swap something from their lunch box for my Twinkie. But I was not going to be weakened by the temptations of other forms of food…. No way!!! Twinkies were my favorite snack!!!

That sugary thing gave me endless hours of energy and no one ever thought about the amount of sugar in it or if it would make me hyper active or cause cavities… No sir; Twinkies were just another enjoyable snack that you bit into and enjoyed the flavor of the thing. But as I got older I must say I wasn’t always a loyal Twinkie fan there was another enticing chocolate treat called ( can’t remember the name) but it was round and chocolate with a creamy filling between 2 chocolate cake like whatever and coated with chocolate and that too was full of nutrition that wound me up for hours too, and let alone thinking about the calories in it….. My waistline is expanding at the thought… over the lips and on the hips!!!

But those chocolate things just couldn’t compete with the Twinkies in my mind! Twinkies are and were one of a kind in taste and that was what counted… Who in their right mind could let such a great treat pass away????

Those fond memories associated with a Twinkie are priceless and so are the hours I spent with my friends eating them too. My mom would bring home a package of Twinkies and we could devour them in minutes if my mom let us, but of course she always said “Not more than one dear because we’re having dinner in an hour.” My thought was who cares about dinner I want to eat the Twinkies and not some boring meal that my mom would cook. I thought back then that moms have no idea about life and what is really good to eat even though I knew deep inside me that she meant well. I saw it as just trying to spoil my fun!

So Twinkie manufactures, don’t let the Twinkie pass away… That was my childhood !!!

Dads are great guys!

Dads are great guys and deserve not to be forgotten either. This coming Sunday is the day for dads to be thanked for all they have done for their families and kids. I thank my dad for all he taught me and put up with through out my younger years.

I sometimes wonder how he managed not to flip-out with some of the things that I did; but instead remained calm and always had something to say that made you think and I can never remember him raising his voice. That must have taken a lot of patience on his part when I think about it now. Thank-you dad!

My dad taught me lots of things and when I was younger thought: “what do I need to know that for?” But now I am thankful that I know how to use power tools and the such because of that I can thank my DAD!

He passed on his wisdom that has stayed with me and not forgotten guiding me through the world whether it be hard times or smooth sailing those words of wisdom have come in handy making me think about what should I do and guiding me in the right direction. Again – Thanks dad!

So, don’t forget your dad because I am sure he taught or told you many a thing that you haven’t forgotten.

Happy Father’s day DAD!!!

The Death of the Encyclopedia

A sad day has now come to our lives as I read yesterday. A company in England that has been printing encyclopedias for hundreds of years will stop printing them. Those wonderful works of art; that we will no longer be able to hold in our hands and enjoy its trove of information is coming to an end. This is heart breaking news and if I had enough money I would buy the company and keep printing those wonderful books.

I remember those wonderful books from my childhood. They supplied me with all the answers to my questions and filled my brain with ideas and the longing to learn more. My parents even up-dated our encyclopedias yearly, so that we had the most up-to-date information. And by doing that we weren’t be behind the times.

Those books helped me with many an essay for high school or my science project and accompanied me through college giving me the wisdom so I could graduate. I remember holding those treasured books in my hand with their leather-bound covers that smelt so nice and the richly illustrated pages explaining to me everything that I wanted to know and more.

Those lovely books stood proudly in the bookshelf at our house there on display in alphabetical order so whoever came by could see that we were readers and had an interest in things. And if I asked my parents a question they couldn’t answer they always said “Look in the encyclopedia and there you will find the answer.” And I did that and was always satisfied with what I found. Plus sometimes I found out even more and this quest for knowledge could be satisfied with those great books.

Now-a-days I only have abridged editions but I own them and I have a couple of others in other languages too, because you don’t find that sort of information anymore.

Things are getting lost in the era of the internet and if you aren’t connected to the internet you seem to be left behind. I ask myself “If you don’t have internet access; how do you get information about certain things?” If there are no encyclopedias anymore in the book form then what do you do? Or is society becoming a mass of people with stagnating brains who have no quest for knowledge?

Hold on to your beloved encyclopedias with it treasure trove of information and you may still even be able to use them to answer your question about something and it still looks good on the book shelf too!

TV & Ironing

I know this doesn’t sound like such an earth moving topic but I thought it really is. I had to iron the other day and I am sure many of you love to do this job just as much as I do.

Well, when I am doing this job I always love to switch on the TV and watch some stimulating entertainment that will amuse me while I am ironing. So as I was zapping through the channels I came across a program about mothers looking for wives for their adult sons. Now I thought I have to watch this! It’s a sad day when a guy about 35 years old needs his mom to go on TV for him to find him a wife.

But since I was home alone I thought this is the program to watch while ironing, and thank goodness that I had everything set-up before the program started so I wouldn’t miss a second of the show ( I mean set-up the ironing board and the other stuff plus a good glass of wine to make the job go more smoothly because I may need it by the time this program is over.) I was sure there would be some real interesting guys on this program and I wanted to be on the safe side to make sure that I didn’t pick the wrong man out in my life. I can just image there I am stuck with the wrong model and I have to let the better model slip through my fingers because I wasn’t watching this program.

Gals take note: Do no miss out on such programs if you are unsure of your present model!!!

Anyways, they showed some guy about 36 years old and his mom was telling about all the good traits that he has. I must say he isn’t really my kind a guy -> maybe I’m tooooooo choosy. Though, the guy’s mom goes on as if she is selling a used car and listing the features that come with it. Plus seemingly forgetting to mention if the warranty is still good or not.

I would not be interested if the warranty still wasn’t valid. You know-> just image you take the joker home with you and you find out that all the parts have rusted and that he needs an overhaul, and let alone all the other things that he brings along could be on the verge of needing expensive refurbishing. NO THANK YOU!!!

But one mom listed her son’s traits something like this:

He can repair small appliances -> I can too, so why do I need him, and if he was so good where’s his girlfriend?

Loves to be at home -> What woman in her right mind wants to stay home all the time? Not me! That’s the reason why his last girlfriend probably left him.

Is faithful -> Is the guy a dog?

Collects bottle caps -> only more junk to dust and maybe that didn’t impress his last girlfriend enough to stay around.

But a guy with such traits is really hard to resist.

But please everyone don’t tell my boyfriend about me watching such programs because he may get jealous and who knows he may dump me because he may think that I want to replace him with a newer model.

The more and more the moms spoke the more engrossed in the program I got and so I said the heck with ironing and sat down on the couch with my glass of wine to enjoy the program.

I was sooooo hooked on learning more about these prospective guys because the things they could do just seemed to top what my boyfriend can do. And while sitting on the sofa watching this program there was a short commercial break were you could call-up and say that you found a guy interesting.

I had to fight with myself because guy #2 was soooo interesting and that I wanted to meet him and by the time the commercial was over I just couldn’t think straight anymore. I was in a state asking myself: “ Stay with your boyfriend or dump him for the guy on TV?”

So I started to make a list of things that my boyfriend can and can’t do.

He can’t fix things very good -> That’s why I’m there.

Takes me out -> That’s why I’m there.

We don’t argue 7 times a day -> That’s why I’m there.

So it seems to me now after listing everything that I will stay with him. And that means that I won’t get a chance to meet all those great guys on TV. But then again I am sure somewhere on this planet there are gals out there just waiting to fall into their arms.

I wish all those guys on TV looking for chicks “good luck” and sorry but you can count me out because I have to finish my ironing.

The giant schnauzer and the hamster

We had a giant schnauzer named Zeus and he was a fun loving dog who wouldn’t harm a sole including other small creatures too including the new member of our family Harry the hamster.

One summer afternoon I came home with Harry because a friend of mine was moving out of state and couldn’t take Harry with her, so I took Harry and gave him a new home at our house. Zeus loved Harry from the first moment he saw him and wanted to play with him but Harry didn’t want anything to do with this.

Maybe because Harry was a bit smaller that Zeus?

Though there was one thing my friend never told me and that was that Harry knew how to open his cage and get out and explore the house during the day while I was at school. Because when I came home in the afternoon Zeus always had that mischievous look on his face and Harry was always in his cage looking terrified and the cage door was open.
So as you can image I always gave Zeus a little lecture about leaving Harry alone and that under no uncertain terms should he let Harry out and play with him! This went on for weeks and the more I scolded Zeus the dirtier his looks got as if to say:” I didn’t do anything you idiot!”
I really couldn’t understand the situation and nor could my parents either.

Well one day there was no school but Harry didn’t seem to notice this fact and that sneaky little Harry just opened his cage with a couple of paw movements and there he was free to roam the house and Zeus just looking at him from the corner of his eye from his dog bed.
Harry made a run for the kitchen were Zeus’s food bowl was and stole some dry dog food and took off towards the dining room where he expertly hid it behind the buffet and darted back again to the kitchen. This went on for about 20 minutes until I put a stop to it and put him back in his cage and all I can say is he wasn’t too pleased to be caught. I think I ruined his day. I wasn’t really sure how much dog food he had hidden behind the buffet because it was a large solid piece of furniture that you couldn’t move by yourself. Though I will admit I never told my parents about this little incident because if I did that would have been the end of Harry.

Anyways, a couple of weeks past and then one day Harry wasn’t in his cage, so I looked behind the buffet and he wasn’t there and I searched the whole house but no such luck. Then I thought maybe Zeus got mad at him and killed him, but there was no evidence of a battle between the two of them. But at night you could hear some activity in the house because Zeus was wandering around or running after something, but I was never able to catch Harry – he was a really fast hamster!

Then one night when everyone was asleep it happened. Harry decided he needed a cozy place to sleep because I guess it got a bit cold for him behind the buffet and thought he would search for a warmer spot to spend the night.
My parent’s bedroom door was open just a crack (you guessed right) and so Harry thought wow that bed looks warm and somehow crawled under the covers and then there came a scream from my parents bedroom and Zeus charged in and jumped on the bed barking his head off all the while my mom screaming her head off and my dad shouting something (not to be repeated here) and I came charging in to see what happened. Well that sneaky Harry decided to sleep on my mom’s foot and as you can image if you are asleep and feel something like that; it can scare the living daylights out of you and it sure did to my mom!
The dog was on the bed when I can into the room barking at my mom’s feet and my dad was trying to pull Zeus off the bed and get him to stop barking; but to no avail. After things calmed down my dad put Harry back in his cage ( Harry was frozen in fear when he got caught in the bed and couldn’t move.)And locked it up with locking wire and said that Harry had to go by the end of the day or else.

Poor Harry I thought, but I did manage to give him to one of the boys in my class and I naturally never told him that Harry knew how to open his cage. Though, after that incident I wasn’t allowed to have any more rodent type of pets in the house. I wonder why ???????
