Icy Ice Cream

Nothing better than ice cream in the summer and the fact that it is national ice cream month somewhere in the world makes it even better….. I love ice cream!!

Sitting here thinking about the ice cream makes me think back to the long summer days when I was a kid and the great ice cream that I ate, and the big event of going out somewhere to have an ice cream was indescribable, because it was such a treat and so it made having ice cream all the better.

Nowadays, I don’t think ice cream is a real treat anymore like it was back then. Ice cream brought a highlight into my week and it was something to look forward to and I know it was the same for my friends too. Ice cream was special for us….

There was one place I remember that had soft ice cream …. The big choice: chocolate or vanilla but you could have a topping on the ice cream cone or a sundae with some hard to describe super sweet topping of either chocolate or strawberry … Not that the toppings weren’t made of artificial ingredients as was the fad back then… it was simply a great tasting treat and who cared about what it was made of…. I only saw the ice cream and the topping and it was great!!!

Or there was some other place not far from our house, where you could go into the ice cream parlor and sit down and order a sundae and it was served in a glass looking like a big wine glass (I felt so sophisticated and grown-up) , two scoops of ice cream and gobs of hot fudge poured over it and some whipped cream and topped off with a cherry…. That was the ultimate in the ice cream world in my eyes back then…..

Though there was some stiff completion out there as to where had the best ice cream and those places were on the ball when it came to creating something using ice cream!

Some ingeniously integrated ice cream into their menu with the root beer float that had a scoop of vanilla ice cream in a glass of root beer, or the other one; a glass of soda pop and a scoop of ice cream in it. That was living at its best and nothing could possibly be better than that in the summer.

Ice cream seemed to have some special meaning for me and my friends and when we got old enough to go to the place on our bikes where we could buy ourselves an ice cream cone, we knew then and there that we were adults and knew how to enjoy life with our ice cream cone in our hand, and after we finished eating the cone ride back home from our big adventure …. The world was ours and that was because of the great ice cream cone that we had just eaten! I love ice cream

Ice cream still tastes great and nowadays there are lots of flavors to choose from, so there is a sort for everyone. How many flavors there are I can’t tell you, but it is a lot!

Either way, somehow ice cream always seems to bring back great memories and eating ice cream is one great thing a lot of us seem to have in common. Enjoy your ice cream!

Sunny Screen

The sunny days of summer and sun screen seem to go together somehow. Now-a-days we use sunscreen to protect our skin from those harmful rays just waiting or lurking outside our homes to say to our skin – “Are you using sunscreen?” And if not than wait a couple of hours and you’ll look like a lobster…

When I was a kid no one every really thought about how those rays from the sun could do damage to our skin. It was more like let’s see how red can we get and in the evening be in excruciating pain from the sunburn… But no one ever said it was bad for us.. Just the opposite “Fresh air & sunshine will do you good.” Or maybe some of you remember the baby oil crazy where everyone thought putting that on your skin was good too… Then again not thinking that it may be working like a magnifying glass.

Those were the days of pure nativity and we had fun!
No worries- mom just pushed me outside for the day and said wear your hat so your face doesn’t get too red. I was happy to oblige and run around in the great sunny weather and enjoy life. Do kids do that today?? I wonder sometimes, because I don’t see them outside playing like we did years ago…. Somehow it all seems so sad.

Now, first the kids have to have the right clothing on then creamed-up with sunscreen and then given instructions and then are allowed to go outside..Boy ,if I had to experience that before going outside as a kid I would have definitely been impatient and run out of the house because I would have been worried that I would have missed out on the action with the other kids, and that was definitely something to worry about and not worrying if I had sunscreen on my skin!! Priorities that’s what it was …..

I remember a friend I used to hang around with and she was a permanent red in the summer but that was healthy her mom used to say… Naturally we all were various shades of red. You just had to line us up and there you had it…. I mean from lobster red to a pale pink, so we covered the color spectrum really good. Sunburn was fun and we could prove it!

Those sunny days and the mean rays from the sun just burning away at our skin brought joy to us and we could compare our sunburns too. Who was the reddest or who was the palest( bad)… that meant you weren’t allowed outside because you were grounded for doing some minor thing (major thing back then) like saying something bad or even worse hitting someone

Oh those sunny summer days of sunbathing without the proper sunscreen are gone forever, because now I have to worry about those vicious rays ruining my skin as soon as I take one step out the door and the aging which it does to my skin too. It never did any of that years ago. Has the sun taken a disliking to me?

So, don’t forget before you go outside next time to use sunscreen or else those harmful rays from the sun could damage your skin now-a-days.

Smell of Love

Who said you can’t smell love? That’s nonsense because someone has come up with a special spray so you can.
This I believe is baloney!!

You don’t need a spray to smell love; you just know it. Remember your first love – oh those were the days! You seemed to be floating on a cloud of happiness and the world smelt wonderful and was. You seemed to have a feeling of joy that couldn’t be put into words; oh I was happy!!

My heart is fluttering thinking back on those times.

Then we get a bit older but we still don’t need a spray for love because you know that you love the other person and your senses are twirling around inside you. The joy and the smell of love.

Maybe after sometime people forget about the smell of love and should be reminded about it but a spray cannot replace your feelings only the real smell of love works if you love each other.

What is the smell of love and how can you define it?

This is something only you can answer because how I smell love may not be the same as how you smell love.

The smell of love cannot be bought because it isn’t tangible nor can you smell love via the internet either. You are only infatuated with the virtual contact and there is no smell of love.

So where’s the smell of love? Does springtime bring about the smell of love with the days getting warmer and that warmth fills our hearts giving us the smell of love. Or maybe in the summer you can smell love when you are together with the person you love. I think the smell of love doesn’t have any seasons; it’s always there with us where ever we go.

But sometimes the small of love can go sour and spoil our smell of love, but once you have gotten over that sour smell then you can rediscover the smell of love that you thought was forgotten.

Enjoy the smell of love because it is always there in your heart and you cannot buy the precious smell of love.

The Cent is Dead

Again a very sad day has come about in history. The death of the wonderful Canadian cent that will be put to rest and no longer produced.
This is yet again another painful episode in 2012 were our beloved treasures of yesteryear are fading away.

Every summer as a kid I visited my grandparents who had a house on a lovely lake in Ontario and there I would get from my grandfather a handful of those wonderful coins.
I felt like a millionaire with all those pennies in my hand and thought I could buy the world too!
And with my riches we would visit the “Five and Dime” store where I could buy the world with my handful of Canadian cent pieces.

I bought many a great thing with those coins for example great rings or a fan and many a barrette for my hair but the best was when I saved up all my pennies and had a dollar and then the world was mine to have, and that summer with my riches I bought myself a beloved minnow net and spent many an hour out on the lake with my friends trying to catch minnows in my net, and that all with the help of the lovely Canadian cent.

I ask those folks who produce that lovely coin “How can you do that to me?” My childhood memories are only a couple of cents that I have left that I can hold in my hand.

I am sure there are many of you out there with fond memories of the Canadian cent and could cry just like I do at the thought of loosing such precious memories.

Love and cherish your cents that you have because there will never again be a penny made like that again!

The giant schnauzer and the hamster

We had a giant schnauzer named Zeus and he was a fun loving dog who wouldn’t harm a sole including other small creatures too including the new member of our family Harry the hamster.

One summer afternoon I came home with Harry because a friend of mine was moving out of state and couldn’t take Harry with her, so I took Harry and gave him a new home at our house. Zeus loved Harry from the first moment he saw him and wanted to play with him but Harry didn’t want anything to do with this.

Maybe because Harry was a bit smaller that Zeus?

Though there was one thing my friend never told me and that was that Harry knew how to open his cage and get out and explore the house during the day while I was at school. Because when I came home in the afternoon Zeus always had that mischievous look on his face and Harry was always in his cage looking terrified and the cage door was open.
So as you can image I always gave Zeus a little lecture about leaving Harry alone and that under no uncertain terms should he let Harry out and play with him! This went on for weeks and the more I scolded Zeus the dirtier his looks got as if to say:” I didn’t do anything you idiot!”
I really couldn’t understand the situation and nor could my parents either.

Well one day there was no school but Harry didn’t seem to notice this fact and that sneaky little Harry just opened his cage with a couple of paw movements and there he was free to roam the house and Zeus just looking at him from the corner of his eye from his dog bed.
Harry made a run for the kitchen were Zeus’s food bowl was and stole some dry dog food and took off towards the dining room where he expertly hid it behind the buffet and darted back again to the kitchen. This went on for about 20 minutes until I put a stop to it and put him back in his cage and all I can say is he wasn’t too pleased to be caught. I think I ruined his day. I wasn’t really sure how much dog food he had hidden behind the buffet because it was a large solid piece of furniture that you couldn’t move by yourself. Though I will admit I never told my parents about this little incident because if I did that would have been the end of Harry.

Anyways, a couple of weeks past and then one day Harry wasn’t in his cage, so I looked behind the buffet and he wasn’t there and I searched the whole house but no such luck. Then I thought maybe Zeus got mad at him and killed him, but there was no evidence of a battle between the two of them. But at night you could hear some activity in the house because Zeus was wandering around or running after something, but I was never able to catch Harry – he was a really fast hamster!

Then one night when everyone was asleep it happened. Harry decided he needed a cozy place to sleep because I guess it got a bit cold for him behind the buffet and thought he would search for a warmer spot to spend the night.
My parent’s bedroom door was open just a crack (you guessed right) and so Harry thought wow that bed looks warm and somehow crawled under the covers and then there came a scream from my parents bedroom and Zeus charged in and jumped on the bed barking his head off all the while my mom screaming her head off and my dad shouting something (not to be repeated here) and I came charging in to see what happened. Well that sneaky Harry decided to sleep on my mom’s foot and as you can image if you are asleep and feel something like that; it can scare the living daylights out of you and it sure did to my mom!
The dog was on the bed when I can into the room barking at my mom’s feet and my dad was trying to pull Zeus off the bed and get him to stop barking; but to no avail. After things calmed down my dad put Harry back in his cage ( Harry was frozen in fear when he got caught in the bed and couldn’t move.)And locked it up with locking wire and said that Harry had to go by the end of the day or else.

Poor Harry I thought, but I did manage to give him to one of the boys in my class and I naturally never told him that Harry knew how to open his cage. Though, after that incident I wasn’t allowed to have any more rodent type of pets in the house. I wonder why ???????

Shoes

This is a disease like the handbag disease. You can’t seem to have enough of them but thank goodness there are 4 seasons, so this gives us gals a chance to as I like to put it: „acquiring what I need for the new season”, because then I don’t have to feel so guilty about my wonderful new pair of shoes that I bought but maybe really didn’t need. I don’t want to be caught with a pair of past season shoes on – oh what a horrendous thought that makes me shiver, because every passerby would point down to my feet and say:” She has a pair of shoes on from last year.” I could scream!

Though those sneaky shoe manufactures always like to pull a fast one on us when the season is in full swing by adding a couple of new styles which make life difficult because you just bought a new pair of shoes a couple of weeks ago. These are the perils of life.

Let’s start with winter: It’s cold outside so we need something warm & stylish on our feet. The choice of winter boots is amazing!
You have the practical sort which do actually keep your feet warm but don’t do much in the way of making you look good. But it’s a must have in every household. Then there are the more stylish sorts, not really there to keep your feet warm but they look so goooood on! These babies can be dangerous if there’s a lot of snow and it’s slippery – you could sprain your ankle or something like that because the heels are so high. The main thing here is fashion and who cares about cold feet or spraining your ankle?
At least I don’t think about it. My only concern is a great looking pair of winter boots! And I am sure many of you think the same way too.

Springtime: The weather is warming up and we can shed our winter boots and say good-bye to those trusted soles, and move on to the pumps, high heels, sneakers or whatever your style is. But this means a new pair or pairs (depending on your storage space at home) for this season. And naturally, 1 pair for just wandering around in and a couple more for the just in case occasion. Always be prepared is my motto -> You never know you may get asked out unexpectedly and you don’t want to be caught short without the right shoes that match the handbag that you bought last month. The thought of those things not being color coordinated is like committing a crime because everyone’s eyes are focused on your handbag and shoes. I am feeling stressed out even before being asked out.

Summertime: This is a very stressful time when it comes to buying shoes because I always feel I need at least 20 pairs for every temperature range and to match what I am going to wear that day. Then like always; as you all know there’s a new model just around the corner creating a strain on our pocketbooks. But you need it because it matches that new dress you bought the other day. I mean really can you image wearing the sandals that matched the blue dress with the new dress that you just bought??? I can’t because that is a definite no go and all your friends will point down at your feet and say: “You should have bought a pair of sandals to go with the dress too, because we all do that.” This is like being pointed out as the odd one out.

Then comes fall and the cool weather meaning we are heading towards the winter cycle and this means out again to the shoe store for the newest model. I feel broke already just writing this here and spring hasn’t even started.

I think women were born with a special gene inside us especially programmed to buy handbags and shoes because without these two wonderful accessories life wouldn’t be so meaningful. What is it that attracts us to these two items and that we have to have them?
And that we fill our closets with these things and sometimes never even wearing the shoes or using the handbag. But you can say what you want about that last sentence, it does look good when you open the door to your closet and there staring at you all those lovely pairs of shoes and next to them all those lovely handbags.
It’s a feeling that can warm your heart!

Remember don’t forget to make room for the coming season and gently say good-bye to the winter boots that you so loving wore.
