I’m waiting for Santa

It just doesn’t seem possible that in a couple of hours it is that time of year again where Santa will be visiting us all around the world.

I have been putting a bit of thought into Santa’s logistics and that guy must really be organized to get all the presents delivered on time to everyone and the time he and his helpers needed beforehand to read all the wish lists and to pack all the presents with the right kind of wrapping paper is unbelievable let alone the amount of wrapping paper needed to wrap everything… That guy Santa is simply amazing!!!

I always wonder does Santa ever have problems with the elves that work for him, because we never hear anything about them and all the great things they do for Santa so he can deliver all the presents on time and how many elves does he have working for him??? Anyone know?

Then there are the reindeer.. Great animals and the strength they must have to pull Santa and his sleigh around is really amazing. We seem to forget about all the logistics behind Santa that makes his one night a year run so smoothly.

Santa…. I am waiting here patiently for you and I just want to thank all your helpers in the background that make your one great night a year a success!

Merry Christmas to everyone out there who has read this post.

Selfie – not today Ohje!

Now that the word „Selfie“ is officially in the dictionary and is a recognized word; I feel now I can use it in a linguistic way… OK??

I know the word has been around for a couple of years now but somehow I didn’t want to use a word that isn’t in the dictionary. I know you think “How old fashioned”.. What can I say; I like to use words that have a definition in a dictionary.

Anyways, back to the “Selfie” – I will admit I do not belong to the “Selfie” crowd because I never take pictures of myself and post them online somewhere, so the world can see me and where I am at the moment. I am happy with myself and do not need recognition, and I am not sure that all the recognition that people get for their “Selfie’s” is truthful?????
Nothing against those folks but I have noticed that with some friends of mine their “Selfie’s” are getting a bit boring, because I know where they are and I know what they look like whether in a picture or in person.
I know no one is interested in what I look like or what is in the back ground, and to top it off I need to find the time to take all these photos and that means less free time for me because I am busy taking “ Selfie’s”.

Ok; some people’s “Selfie’s” are interesting because they are doing some sport or something that is really interesting. They are not just standing there and taking a picture of themselves because they have to prove something… They are taking pictures of something truly interesting!

Years ago before the internet and Smartphone’s you would be seen as being vain if you took a lot of pictures of yourself and now??????

It is really amazing how perception has changed since the invention of the internet, whether that is good or bad…. I cannot say, but I sit back with interest and watch the world evolve around me and hopefully the world will not turn into a too “Selfie” society one day

Heading South?

Well, fall is here and the birds are starting to say good bye and make their way to warmer parts of the world. Every day I see geese flying over my house and saying their goodbyes for this year, how nature knows what to do is fascinating.

I wonder when I look at all those geese where are they flying too and what will they see once they have arrived and will they survive? It’s too bad they couldn’t send me a post card saying that they got there all right and that the weather is nice and there’s plenty to eat.

Sure, we folks head south for a couple of weeks or months depending on whether you are retired or working.. But does anyone send postcards anymore from those warm places that they visit? I haven’t received a nice postcard in ages and have almost forgotten what they look like.

A postcard.. What’s that? Anyone ever heard of that antiquated form of communicating???
Post cards are great and the pictures on them you won’t find anywhere else either. The pictures are always somehow one of a kind. When I was a kid I used to get lots of postcards from family & friends and I knew that they were thinking of me while they were away somewhere in the world.

Oh, how I long for a postcard in my mailbox and then I can say “WOW, my friends thought of me”.

So, think about surprising your friends next time you are away, by sending them a postcard, because I am sure that will bring a smile to their face and smiles are great things!

Perfect times – are they lost?

Perfect times seem to be a thing of the past. I got thinking-I can still do that; an amazing fact!!! About how it was when I was I kid. Life seemed sooooo perfect and the books we read or the TV shows we watched were full of happy people and there was never violence. Those were happy times!!!

What sparked this off was an old TV show that I saw on TV the other day; depicting the happy family. You may remember – Mom stayed home and cooked and was always perfectly groomed and smiling no matter what happened – Are mom’s like that today???
The kids were clean and happy and never complained. Dad was happy too and came home in the evening with a smile on his face as if he just had the best day in his life…. Maybe he did and we just don’t know what he was up too??? I don’t want to ruin the perfectness here… so the dad had a great day at work and is plain old happy!!!

Then there was the great book with Dick & Jane and their dog Spot – that book taught me to read and everyone depicted in the book was happy even the mom & dad. Happiness never seemed to stop. It was everywhere you turned and I was happy too, and didn’t know any better. Life was full of happiness.

I can’t remember as a kid my parents even arguing…. They were happy too, ok- they got upset with me once in a while or our dog but those were only trivial setbacks as I see it now. But back then that meant the end of the world, if I got in trouble!!!

Somehow through the years people stopped being so happy on TV and the people around me don’t seem as happy as they were years ago either. What has happened to being happy?????? Or has the world changed soooo much that people have forgotten what it is like to be happy.

Sometimes I wish for those carefree and happy days of the past again, because people seemed more relaxed and not always in a hurry or worrying about the latest up-date on their social network or some other device that distracts us, so that we have no time to relax and enjoy life.

It would be great to see more content & happy people around – and not in the superficial sense either. Will those sort of days ever come back or are they lost forever??????????

I Forgot My Phone

The worst thing has happened to me today that could make my life come to an end…. What you ask??? I forgot my cell phone at home and I was exposed to the world as it was years ago. A scary experience to say the least!

But thank goodness that my brain still works and I could remember all the important telephone numbers. Ok, I’ll admit I had a tad of a problem with some email addresses but then after about 20 minutes they finally dawned on me… What a relief!!!

And I must say “Thank you brain.” My faithful companion that has been with me for years!

Though most people I met throughout the day could not fathom how I managed to survive and acted as if that was the mortal end of life because I forgot my cell phone at home….. How could I do that???? To be honest I almost gave myself a heart attack when I noticed that my trusty cell phone wasn’t there in my handbag and I knew that I had forgotten my faithful companion at home on the counter….. There all by its self on the counter ringing away and no one was there to answer it… I was rather thoughtless forgetting my beloved cell phone! Wasn’t I?

But once I was able to pull myself together; I thought ok, if you want to speak to me you can call my office number – so use it!

Somehow my lunch was enjoyable without that menacing thing there hanging around my neck (literal sense). I was really free to eat and chat without having the feeling I need to look at the screen of my dumb phone. How wonderful life can be!!!

Later on at a meeting…. Note: I was on time!!! This happened without being reminded by my cell phone… The wonders of my brain!

Ok, like always there is someone there whose humor isn’t how I see things and said to me “How did you remember the meeting without being reminded by your cell phone?” At first I would have liked to punch the guy – but I thought the better of it. I thought to myself that was a sad and stupid question, because isn’t that why we have a brain to remember things with??? Or has it been replaced by the cell phone??

A very interesting question indeed……

But now my day has come to an end and now at home I see my faithful cell phone just blinking away waiting patiently for me to pick it up and see who called. So, If I missed your call today sorry!

Schadensfreude

Schadenfreude is something that is seen everywhere around the world today. The word means that someone takes pleasure in the misfortune of someone else, being it a stranger, friend or family member.

Why have people gotten so that they enjoy the misfortune of others?

You see and read about this everyday and no one seems to notice until it has taken on a large scale or they are made aware of it through some internet platform. I see this almost every day on the street were someone is making fun of the other persons bad luck or situation and the one laughing at the person never really thinks about the damage – being it physical or mental that they are causing or inflicting on the other person.

Schadensfreude seems to have turned into a sort of game amongst younger people inflicting humiliation and mental pain on other people. The ones doing the mobbing feel cool and think “ wow, I’m great” – but have they ever thought about how they would react if they were the victim of schadensfreude? I bet not!!

Where is society going when that is what people do for fun all the time? A sad day for mankind and how people behave – It seems that respect and being polite to each other have been flushed down the toilet.

It seems to me the people who enjoy schadenfreude are the ones who have the real problem and don’t know how to deal with their problems, so they think “hey, I’ll make someone else’s life miserable or I will enjoy that they are having a bad time and can rub their nose in it.” What jerks those people are!

People should try to have a day were they could be nice to everyone and not be happy that the other person is having a bad time and maybe their lives would be better too because there isn’t any schadenfreude.

Electric Cars

Electric cars are the coming thing in transport and many people are interested in them as are the manufacturers that what you to buy them.
Are they really good for the environment or are those manufactures just jumping on the “Eco Bandwagon” trying to convince us that we need such a vehicle?

Those folks at the auto manufactures have invested tons of money and I am sure they want a return on their investment and so have to push their product no matter what.

What I don’t understand is where is the electricity going to come from to power those electric vehicles; when they want to shut down more atomic power plants that produce electricity.

You need electricity for everything now-a-days besides a car. Just think about it for a moment.

You need electricity from the time you get-up to the time you go to bed plus even when you are asleep too. You need electricity for almost every step you take.

Your alarm clock goes off – electricity

Your coffee at home or in a café – electricity

Radio, TV, at work, or shopping , and at the gas station – you need electricity.

Your computer or cell phone, cooking or eating out it is all connected to electricity and then I am supposed to buy an electric car to save energy?

Please tell me how???

I ask those folks making electric cars: How am I saving electricity with an electric car?
Plus, I can’t drive very far either before I have to recharge the battery again. And that means I need electricity for my car and if I have to wait I’ll drink a coffee and/ or have something to eat, and playing with my computer too -> you need electricity.

I am dumbfounded here with all this electricity because at the end of the day no one is using less electricity, and they may be using more because some marketing person is saying everything is energy efficient so please buy more of everything that runs on electricity!

But where is the extra electricity going to come from and who’s going to pay the price for it??

And so everyone goes out with a good feeling and buys more thinking that they are doing their share because that little rating label on the product say so. Has anyone thought about the production methods behind the product or where it is shipped from and the amount of electricity and other sorts of resources that are used to produce it? I bet not

Electricity is also a precious thing and resources are required to produce it too and I think people should be aware or make themselves aware of how much electricity they actually use in the course of a day otherwise too the lights may go out for a long time and there you are sitting in the dark because no one thought about how much electricity they needed and your electric car will sit in the garage too because there won’t be enough electricity to run it either like your gas run car.

Be aware of how much energy you use and think about your next purchase of an electrical appliance be it large or small -> are you really saving and do you really need it?

World Earth Day April 22, 2012

World Earth Day is a day to make you aware of what is happening to the earth.

This is a good idea but why only on this day?

People should think about the environment everyday and not just for a couple of hours on a specific day. If people practiced saving energy and natural recourses and thought about how much water, gas, energy or other things that they use throughout their day we wouldn’t need to be reminded once a year that the earth’s resources are slowly but defiantly dwindling away.

Society seems to have gotten so greedy that they only think about themselves and what they need and not on the next generations to come and will there be anything left for those generations too?

There are so many ways a household can make their mark on the environment but are they willing to and do they maybe want to do without? This I doubt very much and so there you go the problem with the environment.

I myself can see the changes in the world around me that are caused from waste. Look at the oceans with all the plastic floating around in it and this being ingested by fish or they get tangled up in it and die. But as many think -> who cares; out of sight out of mind!

Or why does everyone have to own so many cars and then they all wonder -> why is there a gas shortage and prices are rising. Really now folks get real!

Or do you really need to watch TV 24/7 because the television set consumes a lot of energy and you have to pay for the electricity too. Maybe, ever thought of a TV free day or reading a book that could stimulate the mind as an alternative.

Another one is what ever happened to the good’ol clothes line where you hung your clothes out to dry and the wind and the sun dried them and they smelled good too and all that without the need of an electric dryer. The wonders of nature can be fascinating!!

There are thousands of ways that people can help out and still enjoy life. It is just a matter of starting to change your life style and not always procrastinate and say that I’ll start that tomorrow because you know as well as I do “Tomorrow never comes”

Think about what you can do and maybe you will feel better about yourself by doing your bit for the earth!

Can I Drive my Car?

With the price of gas/petrol or whatever you like to call it there seems to be a constant increase in its price. Sooner or later I won’t be able to drive my car anymore because I just plain cannot afford it.

You read daily that prices are increasing and that supplies are dwindling and so forth, but no one has come up with a real alternative that could help us.

I was looking at the cost of gas on the internet in various countries and was somewhat surprised at the prices.(note prices are not today’s and have changed since I wrote this.)

UK: £ 5.00 a gallon / Canada: $ 5.15 a gallon / Germany: € 6.36 a gallon

My gosh, I need to be a millionaire to fill the tank up of my car. I need to ride my bicycle more. This is good for the environment and I get exercise at the same time. And there are more positive things to riding a bike, like it helps you lose weight or you get out of the house and see the world from a different angle, and you can do your shopping too.

My advice: plan ahead with grocery shopping, because you have to carry everything and balance it all too! Or else your eggs could break.

The bicycle is a great thing, though many have just forgotten about it and I think now it will be making its comeback in the times when gas prices are rising.

And my car? Well, I will put it in the garage all nice and shiny and on the wall in front of my car hang a screen and there you go. I have my own drive-in movie theater right at my doorstep.

When I feel like going out to the movies in my car all I have to do is make some popcorn load up the DVD player with the movie I/we want to see and sit in my car and enjoy a full screen movie. You can do this too and if your car is large enough you can invite some friends over for a drive-in movie in your garage.

Though, I would recommend the garage drive-in only in the summer months because you can’t have the cars motor running in the garage. Firstly, because it’s dangerous for your health and secondly it would be bad for the environment and expensive for your wallet.

I am getting a bit reminiscent about gas prices here. When I think back all those years to my very first car that my parents gave me for graduating from high school. Now that was a car!!!

A convertible with a couple of holes in the roof for extra ventilation on rainy days and a bit of Irish lace too; that added a special note to the car. Making it one of a kind and ooh, I forgot to add if it rained and the distributor cap got damp then it wouldn’t start at all and then needed a blow dryer to get the moisture out of the distributor cap. A must for all car drivers today…..

That car was great even when it cause my father many a head ache. It was simply cheap to run. I could fill it up for $1.00 and drive all week. I forgot to mention it was some small European thing whereas all my friends had larger models and couldn’t afford the gas. So when they were strapped for cash everyone wanted to have the luxury of my car. Even back then a small car paid off, but you won’t find gas that cheap anymore.

I rode my bicycle everywhere too back then because it was somehow more fun than always riding around in my car.

Try riding your bicycle and see how much fun it can be and get to see the world from a different perspective and save some gas too.

The Cent is Dead

Again a very sad day has come about in history. The death of the wonderful Canadian cent that will be put to rest and no longer produced.
This is yet again another painful episode in 2012 were our beloved treasures of yesteryear are fading away.

Every summer as a kid I visited my grandparents who had a house on a lovely lake in Ontario and there I would get from my grandfather a handful of those wonderful coins.
I felt like a millionaire with all those pennies in my hand and thought I could buy the world too!
And with my riches we would visit the “Five and Dime” store where I could buy the world with my handful of Canadian cent pieces.

I bought many a great thing with those coins for example great rings or a fan and many a barrette for my hair but the best was when I saved up all my pennies and had a dollar and then the world was mine to have, and that summer with my riches I bought myself a beloved minnow net and spent many an hour out on the lake with my friends trying to catch minnows in my net, and that all with the help of the lovely Canadian cent.

I ask those folks who produce that lovely coin “How can you do that to me?” My childhood memories are only a couple of cents that I have left that I can hold in my hand.

I am sure there are many of you out there with fond memories of the Canadian cent and could cry just like I do at the thought of loosing such precious memories.

Love and cherish your cents that you have because there will never again be a penny made like that again!
